Great

What a relief.

Anonymous postings

Anonymous postings are still allowed... I understand that is one of the main issues. Looks like their concern has been ignored.

Excellent - welcome back :)

Welcome back!

And hopefully onward and upward from here, for the good of the theatre community.

Ironic but true.

It appears that the above post about anonymous postings was done anonymously. By contrast I'll put my name to this. There have been some outrageous comments posted in this forum over the years. The vast majority (if not all) of them anonymously. You have had an ITA committee member on Facebook over the weekend linking the outage to actual and/or threatened legal action over some of these comments. It is this simple: get rid of the ability for people to post anonymously. This will reduce the number of problematic postings and leave the administrators with a more manageable problem.

Hope it's all over

Hope everything is settled now. Remember people, respect the site and respect the people who take the time to write constructive reviews, comments and media releases. This is a fantastic resource which we don't want to loose.

Never let the facts get in

Never let the facts get in the way of a strongly held, stridently expressed opinion. Especially if that opinion is informed by an equally ill-informed view found on that font of veracity, Facebook. I will not itemise the detail of threatened legal action in this public forum but as always am more than happy to share this detail with the committee. There was one threat of legal action earlier this year. The first in more than two years. Year - threats 2013 - 1 2012 - 0 2011 - 1 2010 - 4 2009 - 1 2008 - 1 These eight complaints related to 184 posts or comments on the website. Of these, 137 were posted by registered users and only 47 were anonymous. The vast majority (not quite all) "problematic postings" resulting in legal threats have been by registered users. Judging by most requests for removal on grounds of alleged defamation the worst person on the site is a registered member called Labrug. Where have all the complaints in the last five years originated from? So-called "agents" attempting to silence complaints about fees, quality and lack of service. Number of threats resulting in any actual legal action whatsoever? 0 Would you care to revise your position on this evidence and, according to your logic, suggest that registered users should be banned and that only anonymous postings allowed? There have indeed been some outrageous comments posted on this forum over the years and the clear majority of them have been posted by registered users just like you. I hope that this has helped you find some much needed perspective on this issue. You may now wish to find something more worthy of your outrage.

I'm sorry.

I'll never do it again. :O

Serously, if I am the worst... that says a lot.

Never let the facts

I love a good statistic! Well done on a battle well fought. Let us hope that this is the battle that has won the war! Louise Carson

Bahahahhaahahaha! Oh, that

Bahahahhaahahaha! Oh, that is gold. Grant, thanks for the stats about the legal threats. Do we have stats on registered users V Walters when it just comes to being a general dick? :)

Facebook comment

That was my error on Facebook - I had just assumed the problem was with anonymous post. My error & I have deleted the comment. Truly glad to have you back though. Ciao Rob

Naughty Labrug

They obviously don't like you labelling them trolls and insisting that ppl don't feed them ;)
LabrugWed, 25 Sept 2013, 09:21 am

Or

Or when I point out that the one person has posted several anonymous comments that would prefer you to suppose they were NOT the same person.

Just goes to show, not many poeple can handle honesty.

Dear

Dear Grant/Administrator, In my defence, I was referring to an ITA committee member who happened to be posting on Facebook. Having it on Facebook does not improve the validity of a statement in itself (no more than posting it here for that). Having it posted by an ITA committee member is the key point. (I'm not sure what comments that Rob was referring to) I'll take your word regarding the figures. I was going on what I have seen here over the years, including anonymous comments about me and production I have been involved in. No, I'm not planning to lawyer up any time soon. All jokes aside regarding Jeff/Labrug, why if the identity of a serial 'problematic' poster was known, was this person not made aware of this? I'm not outraged by all of this, I'm just astounded that the web site was re-directed to another domain. It seems like an over reaction to a problem when there were other actions that were less drastic and available. D.

Problematic Posts

The "Problematic Posts" were made aware to the user (me) as I was privy to the threats and such, as well as being the victim, or at least one of. The complainant also attempted to defame me through rather slanderous associations. All I did was advise our users that a singular anonymous user was posing as various individuals in order to improve the apparent reputation of a company reference also posted by the complainant.

I also made very general comments to the effect that people should always be very careful about joining an agency and to do their research before signing anything. The complainant took personal offence and after some to and fro statements, threats, slanderous associations on other sites (as well as here), then brought in a "lawyer", at which point, as per the legal advice offered to the Site Admin, certain comments were adjusted to remove the majority of their content, which included a large number of general advice comments I had personally posted.

I was involved in all aspects of this process. The point I think Grant was trying to make is that relative to the number of posts made on this site, the number that have "caused offence" or been the subject of legal concerns is incredibly small, fractional even. The fact that many of them are mine is representative as to the overall impact they have had.

Better than I deserved :-)

Dear David

Thank you for your civil response, rather more than the ridiculing tone of my own post deserved. Please accept my apologies for the unnecessary jibes.

Given the demonstrably low risk posed by anonymous postings, I have argued that requiring registration provides no real protection while placing a barrier in the way of what have been frequent useful unregistered contributions.

I would go further than the view espoused by Jeff and make clear what I have always replied to these complaints of defamation that I do not accept their assertion that the remarks on this site constitute libel and that I will remove them only as a matter of courtesy when a direct complaint is made.

Personally, I believe that these people are employing bullying tactics and legal threats to shut down thoroughly legitimate discussion and advice simply because an informed point of view differs from their own or may be a threat to their business model.

While I am always the person responsible for dealing with these threats, I appreciate that the current committee (for this and perhaps other reasons (who knows!)) may prefer not to face the prospect that these threats may go further. I support what would appear to be their decision to encourage the site to find a new home - something I suggested perhaps six years ago but the committee chose not to pursue at the time.

Unfortunately along the way it appears the committee has been given some astonishingly poor advice that led them to take thoroughly inappropriate action.

I'm going to post an update as the administrator to the homepage but I hope that the committee will soon post their own side of this saga and confirm verbal advice to me that they will support the transfer of the domain to another incorporated association established specifically to support this community.

I really do look forward to seeing this community put this episode behind it and, in response to Jeff's gentle promptings, seeing what the future has in store.

Cheers
Grant

What the....?

What the....??? I'm a tad bamboozled...however, I gather someone hit a metaphoric panic button of some kind. Keep calm and carry on (as a current meme suggests). At the end of the day there will always be people who threaten or even carry out their threats. The trick is to not cave in at the first sign of stormy skies. They will happen, with such a large and wide spread website like this they WILL happen. Better to face that nasty fact, but if it's causing sleepless nights then the insomnia affected might be better off not being involved and therefore not having to deal with it. Your personal health is the most important thing, even more than theatre. I'll stop rambling now...ignore my two cents worth.

Didn't expect that

Judging by most requests for removal on grounds of alleged defamation the worst person on the site is a registered member called Labrug.
I thought it might have been someone else. And yet, that makes perfect sense to me. Of course, Jeff you may simply be the last standing rather than the actual worst of the lot. ... And why do I get the strange feeling I know the identity of the anonymous user spoken of below. - Grant, you have my 110% support to move the site. I also give 250% to find a lawyer who can tell the difference between hollow threats and who will reply in proper fashion. I've read a lot more since the events and my guess would be you could stand your ground a lot more than have in the past. (IANAL!)
