Tue, 27 Mar 2012, 11:05 am
ACTT1 post in thread
Mary and Lizzie By Frank McGuinness Directed by Maeliosa Stafford “Listen to the world changing. Listen to the world ending.” Seductive women in trees, chocolate-covered strawberries and an attempted suicide. So begins renowned Irish playwright Frank McGuinness’ magical mystery tour led by Mary and Lizzie Burns, two Irish sisters who met, loved and lived with Friedrich Engels when the world was about to end. A maelstrom of fact and fiction, politics and poetry, passion and laughter- Mary and Lizzie shows us our hearts breaking and hearts broken… “How different we are as a species, male, female and those between both!” What defines us? Race? Religion, Gender? Politics? What unites us, what divides us? And why do we never seem to learn from the past? As Mary and Lizzie encounter Karl Marx, Queen Victoria and a pig man as part of the parade of historical, fantastical figures – the mirror is held up to us, the audience and we’re invited to sing along… but do we like what we see? Directed by the formidable Maeliosa Stafford, ACTT proudly presents the 2012 Graduating Class production of Mary and Lizzie.
