"Minefields & Miniskirts"
By Terrence O'Connell
Directed by Peter Kirkwood
It is not generally known that almost one thousand Australian women were in wartime Vietnam during the nineteen sixties and seventies. They were employed as nurses, consular staff, secretaries, entertainers, journalists and church volunteers to name but a few.
This is their story, and what an important, powerful story it is.
Based on interviews with some fifty women, "Minefields and Mini Skirts" is a story that has to be told. It is the story of how Vietnam has transformed the lives of five ordinary Australian women and of how those experiences still haunt their memories.
This play is not only about these women and their time in Vietnam but also about their lives before and after the war. It is about how their experiences, both good and bad, have shaped their future lives and relationships.
The extraordinary strength, resilience, bravery and humour of these five ordinary Australian women will touch and move audiences of all ages. Although these events happened approximately forty years ago, the relevance in contemporary society is startlingly evident.
