HELP WANTED: Can this singer act..?

I learnt more by taking on small non-speaking/background roles and watching/talking with other actors than any class or training. Even offering to help out backstage doing props or stage-hand duties will give you some exposure.
Alternatively, you could look at the occasional Adult Workshops that some of the Universities do.

Thanks Jeff I've done one
Until...
Until you start thinking, hmm, I'd do it like that personally.
That or take the plunge and start auditioning anyway. Auditioning is possibly the hardest part so if you can get over that before you land a part (as such) you'll be ahead of the game. You could always audition and offer to take on smaller roles and bake-stage. That way you get the Audition Experience while minimising the "risk."

I went for one audition -
Final word ;-)
"just scared of not being able to deliver because I don't know enough when it gets to rehearsals etc..."
In these situations, sometimes it is best to leave it in the hands of the director to guide you. You fellow cast members often can help out also.

The musical you commented on asking about rehearsal space would be a perfect start if you get cast! Email me for an audition and we'd love to see you. Its a small cast musical where all characters are main roles and the acting required isn't too hard. The director teaches musical theatre classes so she wouldn't be too worried if you're not sure in the rehearsal process, the cast and her will all be there to give you a step up if you get cast. All you can do is try.
I've been in community theatre for a few years now and I love doing it even if I've never had a main role. When you put your heart and soul into something you definitely see the result no matter how small your part is :P (my first role back in theatre was 10 minutes on stage out of a 2hr play :D the most fun was backstage with the other ensemble)
Hope to hear more from you and see you up on stage soon!!
