Come have a drink with Don's Party

After a very long hiatus, the bar at Melville theatre will be open for the season of Don's Party. It has been over 12 months since we were able to sell a drink. In fact, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum was the last show at which we opened the bar. Why? The department of Racing, Gaming and Liquor informed us in 2010 that we would no longer be able to obtain Occasional Licenses to operate our bar, as we had for the last 20+ years. As far as I understand, the regulations haven't changed, but the department's interpretation of the Occasional License has. As we were applying for more than the allowable number of licences in a 12 month period, we were asked to apply for a permanent licence. What follows is a long, painful and drawn out process that would make for a fine one act play. I have a working title of The Killjoy Division. :) Long story short - our licence application has now been approved, the annual fee has been paid, and the paperwork will be in our mailbox early next week. So help us recoup the ridiculous amount of money this process has cost, and come have a drink at our production of Don's Party. Let's face it, Don's Party without a drink would be downright unAustralian. http://www.theatre.asn.au/production/2010/dons_party

Come have a drink......

I don't think there will be much of a problem with re-couping (some) of the costs during the run of Don's Party.

The cast will probably make a fair dent.

Another thought.

You could always sue the Dept Of Stupid Bastards for loss of revenue.... you never know; it might work...

The bar hardly turns a profit. Our drinks are cheap, and we give our cast and crew freebies. It's there as a service to our patrons. Having said that, it's cost over $3K to get this licence. www.meltheco.org.au

Yes, you are absolutely correct Jeff.

We do much the same, by the time you factor in freebies- including first night/last night  'celebrations' we break even and certainly make a small profit, but- as you say its a service and not a money making enterprise.

However, I am quite certain that all your effort will be well rewarded. Don't forget that DramaFest is coming up and we found that very "lucrative"!
