Every now and again we have a week or two with very few shows, and then as if by magic, there are a dozen opening nights at once.

Can I suggest that as soon as a director or producer is thinking about putting on a production, that they enter the play's name with dates, in the 'What's on' section of this site - even if it is a year ahead. Just the Title and Dates, no venue, cast etc required, you will have pegged out your claim.

This entry, which can always be deleted later if necessary, allows others to see what is happening in the future and so help them spread the shows around. It also stops the same play being produced several times in a couple of months.

Thank you

When companies are trying

When companies are trying to squeeze six shows a year in, it is inevitable that the shows will run at similar times. There are indeed a plethora of shows on at the moment. I think that this speaks volumes about the level of interest in theatre in Perth, both by performers and audients. Melville is presenting five seasons in 2011, so this may put us out of step with the performance dates of the six-show companies. I haven't looked, and it's not something that the committee takes into consideration when selecting dates for performances. We look at allowing a decent rehearsal period between shows, time for set-building and such things. When other clubs are doing shows is irrelevant. I can understand why someone who sees as much theatre as you do would like them to be spaced out more evenly, but it's not really practical. There are only so many ways you can fit five or six shows into a year. Take 2010 for example - I sat down with a calender with six shows to fit in. As we were hosting Dramafest, I used that as a starting point, and worked forward and back from there. When I had a suitable programme, I took a look at the dates that the Old Mill were performing, and the dates I had come up with were identical, give or take a week here or there. Why? Because they had used the same method to program shows, using the same starting point with the same number of shows. I shall now go and check to see that all our 2011 shows are posted as productions here on this site. www.meltheco.org.au
