AUDITION NOTICE: THE CUT BY MARK RAVENHILL Axe Soup Description: Paul is an ordinary man with a shocking secret. At home he is a loving husband and father. At work he administers the Cut. In a society sickened by his profession, Paul struggles with his conscience and longs to tell the truth. “Intriguing... edgy... combines the enigma and menace of early Pinter with the political anger of late Pinter. If the play has a theme, it is one that might have been expressed by the late, great Peter Simple’s Dr Heinz Kiosk: ‘We are all guilty’.” Charles Spencer, Telegraph Roles Available: Paul – 40 to 50 years old A complex character – both hard and weak – who refuses to be defined by his controversial job. Coolly authoritative one minute, painfully vulnerable the next, he has an intense faith in and love for his family but is paralysed by the fear of exposure. (The actor playing this role will be required at all rehearsals). John – 16 to 30 years old A young man who, above all else, desires the Cut. He is eager and passionate, desperately seeking to follow in his ancestors’ footsteps. This consuming desire ultimately exposes the human emotions which have become virtually taboo in his world. Susan – 30 to 40 years old A homemaker and Paul’s doting, obedient wife. By turns flippant, strong and malleable. Rehearsals: From Sunday 22nd of January, every Tuesday, Thursday (evenings) and Sunday (afternoons) at Flinders University (Oasis Common Room). Performances: To take place during the second and third week of the Adelaide Fringe Festival. Monday 28th of February to 12th of March – 12 Performances Monday through Saturday. Auditions Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th of November 2010, 10am to 5pm, at Flinders University (Oasis Common Room). Email director Ryan Ricci for further information: ryan.ricci@hotmail.com.
