The Melbourne Fringe Festival, The Dog Theatre and X-Roads Collective present:
De Profundis
The tragic tale of Oscar Wilde unveils itself onto the Melbourne Fringe stage in a moving and whimsical solo physical theatre interpretation of his infamous letter De Profundis, coming to the Dog Theatre as part of its À La Carte programme, September 28th – October 2nd.
Oscar Wilde was one of the Victorian era’s most well-known and notorious personalities. A writer, poet and propagator of the aesthetic movement, Wilde entertained and scandalised society with his deadly wit, flamboyant dress and sparkling conversation. He was also one of the most successful playwrights of his day, writing such comic masterpieces as “The Importance of Being Earnest” and “An Ideal Husband”.
However, at the height of his fame, Doom stepped in, and Wilde suffered a dramatic and unrelenting fall from grace. Caught in the middle of an eternal hatred between his lover and his lover’s father, Wilde found himself embroiled in a sensational series of trials that eventuated in his two-year incarceration for ‘acts of gross indecency’, i.e. homosexuality!
It is from within his prison cell that he wrote one of the greatest love letters ever penned, De Profundis; a monumental 50, 000 word ‘symphony of sorrow’ which harrowingly traces the dramatic downfall that was a direct result of his disastrous love affair.
Lifting the story and philosophies at the heart of this letter from off the page and into a theatrical setting, this production re-imagines the imprisoned Wilde as legendary entertainer, Oh So Wilde. Trapped in a dark and lonely cell, Oh So Wilde strives to rise from the depths of his despair by spell-binding his inmates with a deliciously searing saga of love and tragedy.
Conceived, Written and Performed by Warren Herbu (Best Male Actor, Act Provocateur Solo Festival, London, 2007), Designed by Emmy Lou, and Devised in collaboration with Director Brodie Maguire, this production fuses unique physicality, epic storytelling, poetical beauty and lip-synching to create a magical experience that echoes the drama of the Ancient Greeks and celebrates the Wildean values of imagination, invention and inconsistency.
Delicately dancing between the comic and the tragic, De Profundis is a stunning, modern and powerfully relevant theatrical portraiture of one man’s desperate attempt to survive the terrible wheels of Fate.
“It’s an absolute privilege to watch Herbu perform - this is one extremely talented actor to watch out for” Simonne-Michelle Wells, Australian Stage
