OLD  MILL  THEATRE
PLAY READING
Wednesday 19 May 2010
“PARRAMATTA GIRLS”

The Old Mill Theatre’s second play reading in the 2010 programme will be a contemporary Australian play written by Alana Valentine.
The play tells the story of a group of former inmates of a juvenile detention centre (Girls’ Training School, Parramatta), who meet at a reunion during which they endeavour to talk away the memories that haunt them all in different ways.  The play deals with the effects of institutionalisation and depicts the many coping mechanisms used by individuals to cope with the pain, the deprivation and the loneliness of incarceration.  The play adopts some of the techniques of verbatim theatre and although it is a sad script, it is also a humorous script. The off-beat humour ensures the play never becomes maudlin or sentimental.
Come along and join other Old Mill Theatre members and supporters in listening to a very powerful script or take the opportunity to read a part in this very interesting Australian drama.
It is an all girl script but we welcome all our male members and supporters and would encourage them to come along to provide input into the after-reading discussion and to suggest ideas regarding staging and production, as this may be a play the OMT will stage in the future.
