A farewell to the Playhouse Theatre

Perth Theatre Company will end our 16 year residence at the Playhouse Theatre, and will become associate resident Company of the new State Theatre Centre of Western Australia later this year!

We are proud to announce that as our farewell season to this wonderful theatre we will present David Williamson’s 1971 Australian classic, The Removalists, in late August.
Melissa says, “It is a work of unnerving honesty and intensity that represents a moment in time where people saw at once what was possible for Australian drama. It is a work of brutal, hilarious, staggering intelligence.”

On Wednesday 21 April we will post The Removalists information packs with all the details (including the much loved Australian actor we have cast), so be sure to check your letter box!
Following an exclusive booking period for our past subscribers, tickets will then go on sale to the general public on Saturday 8 May through BOCS Ticketing, so be sure to put that date in your calendar!

As this is Perth Theatre Company’s last production at the Playhouse Theatre, you don’t want to miss out on this extraordinary David Williamson classic. We have presented many of Williamson’s work at the Playhouse, including Charitable Intent in 2006, Soulmates in 2005 and 2006, and Face to Face in 2005.

Silly question time.

I am aware that I should probably know the answer to this already, but I must confess total ignorance; what is going to happen to the Pier Street property? Why couldn't it be maintained as a theatre? Is the Church buying the land back, or charging extortionate rates for the site as is? Thanks, El

Unsure

Not certain of the exact details but last I heard there were plans to redevelop the area into Offices.

playhouse

The Anglican church own the land and are not willing to extend the lease to the Perth Theatre Trust beyond december i believe. Decommissioning starts in January. there are various stories about whats going to happen on the site after that time, ranging from demolition (also to include the Law Chambers buildings on Hay Street that the Church also owns) to limited use as a rehearsal venue for the choir. The state theatre centre (in northbridge) was solely conceived as a replacement to the Playhouse so it is something that has been on the cards since 2004. so even if it isn't being demolished it would not be a Perth Theatre Trust venue and would have to be operated by another organisation, which given some of the requirements on a venue these days, would make it hard to run commercially.

Damned shame.

Every pun intended... ;-) El
