Anonymous Postings & Possible Consequences
Thu, 25 Feb 2010, 05:46 pmPerhaps I'm too old to 'get' the joke, however I've been horrified to read what I hope are supposed to be tongue in cheek comments about Grant Watson. And even if there was any truth to the rumours, we don't have the French justice system - here in Australia there is a presumption of innocence.
The hideous reality of people publicly making such comments, whether in jest or not, is that some mud always sticks, no matter how innocent / exonerated a person may be. The courts are starting to get very serious about such postings, anyone doubting this would do well to read page 17 of today's West Australian newspaper (Thursday 25 February 2010) - it's just cost a coward - sorry - anonymous blogger, $30,000 plus costs in the WA Supreme Court.
Issue
Tue, 2 Mar 2010, 10:40 am"It is common knowledge that this site will always remove posts that attract that sort of attack and so people with inadequate ego's can achieve small wins (in their own eyes) by having posts removed."
And it is not an uncommon practise across the net. ZdNet also do this along with many others besides. The difference between what many of these other sites do and what is done here is that (for technical reasons) Admin does not remove the post itself. It is simply edited to reflect the request for removal. The comment trail is left.
I requested slanderous material removed from ZdNet some time back and they agreed that the content was not relevant to the topic being discussed and said posts disappeared from the article completely. There is no trace of it left.
Which ever way you look at it, the removal of defamatory material is a very regular and common event. Being able to see said removals is the only thing that differentiates Theatre Australia.
ADDED: Besides, we, as registered users, have the power to remove posts through Moderation. Technically, Admin has given more power of choice to the users then is exercised by himself.
