New pay rates for techies and performers

"From January 1st, everyone is now under an award. Technicians, floor crew, musicians, strippers. Everyone. Suddenly everyone working behind the scenes in entertainment is covered by a national minimum award wage system. The Fair Work Act provided simplified awards from January 1st 2010 to all workers including those not unionised. This somewhat radical change affects all industries, and has seen 1,700 federal and state awards condensed into around 120 ‘modern awards’. For those covered by an enterprise agreement or contract, then life remains the same – provided they are not worse off under the new award. So the new award really is the bottom pay, and everyone will quickly come to know what they should get. The devil is in the detail. If you are not currently covered by either an award or an enterprise agreement, then your minimum rates of pay are affected from January 1st." Complete article here: http://theatretechgeek.wordpress.com/2010/01/11/new-pay-rates-2010/ ... Seems the new pay rates are also based on your level of qualifications, not just on what you're hired to do... (Lucky for me I have a Dip., otherwise I'd get low rates!)

My goodness

My goodness, this has been a long time coming! I researched a bit of the Fair Work Act when I was working for a non profit organisation, not theatre related, and my aim was to work out if it would apply to that workplace. In some ways I applaud this, it means people who weren't covered by a specific Award or EBA now have some sort of 'safety net' but on the other hand I'm not sure it goes far enough. Must read and digest.... "Life is too short to stuff a mushroom"

When?

They never do. They establish a purely Minimum Condition and when you are in negotiations between those paying and those being paid, getting that happy balance is pretty much impossible.

I have been minimally involved (fringes) in similar type negotiations. They will never go far enough for either side.

EBA

It was my great misfortune to get hijacked into being an employee rep. during that non profit organisation's attempt to create an EBA. Talk about mind blowing. I hope I never have to do that again, although now I've got some experience I suppose I should. It's very hard to keep one eye on the big picture while you're settling on small details, very easy to forget something and suddenly realise a crucial area has been forgotten, or is just a bad deal for employees. On the other hand there are a lot of people out there who just couldn't even begin to negotiate an OK deal for themselves, which is where EBAs are supposed to offer some protection. I am torn on the subject! "Life is too short to stuff a mushroom"

Emotional

I feel for you. I know of what you speak. We all want the best yet on man's best is another man's rubbish. What can you do? (rhetorical.)

This is horrifying news

Once again, a Government strips power from the citizens it is supposed to serve. I should have the right to set my own price. I demand that right - now it appears that I must find ways of enforcing it.

This country sinks further and further into the slime of its own inadequacy. There is nothing new going on. Every time a Government does something marvelous and adventurous and humane for our citizens, the public responds by electing another that will retard and - if possible - prevent the effects. Manhood Suffrage, Universal Suffrage (voting rights for women), realistic welfare and their like were all followed by Governments that had been elected to stultify the emerging gains for the community. Now it has happened again.

I am appalled for my industry, ashamed of my country, and I will not comply.

We are watching the beginning of the death of independent theatre - fight it!

Just to let some of you

Just to let some of you know... who may not be so clued-up on the way things work here. Labrug and Na is a fucking liars and anything they says should be filtered through a deep process of purification. He and she is as corrupted as that last hard drive you dumped on IBM's reception desk. Do not trust or believe anything these miserable fuckers has to say on anything. He and she will get his and her due and will be fucking sorry to bother any of you again with his and her fucking lies. Trust me... I will fucking get these liars for you. I will shit on their heads.

Oh yummy - another troll!

Harwey,

It is common when insulting people to attend to the rules of grammar. This gives you credibility. It might repay you to look up 'pronouns' in the nearest English language manual. I offer this advice in the friendliest of spirits.

And I recommend you do it before spilling the insides of your skull upon the outsides of theirs.

While I don't disagree

While I don't disagree Noel, but on the other side of the fence I do agree with having an Albion [all be one] award system. For far too long theatre management has been duck shoving theatre employees between State & Federal Awards depending upon which was cheaper on a given day.

I hope they have taken into consideration the question of 'Time In Lue' & all it's inherant problems as well.

I remember being given an edict once about TIL from management. Being that as overtime &/or penalities were not regarded as part of the eqation,  all TIL acrued could only be considered as a benefit to the employee. Thus of  no monitory value to the management or the worker & any outstanding amount will be zerod each year. So my efforts of perfoming 20 weeks flat rate worth of work that year & previously TIL acrued, was all valued @ nowt? [That's all another story]

I like the qualification provisions as that will put up the weight of the golden eagle, but it might have an adverse effect. {"For every action, there is an opposite & equal reaction'}

Sharp enough for all the heads

Gaafa,

I'm not sure I understand all the detail of your story, but it sounds to me like you should have gone in with an axe in both hands to get your entitlements. If the situation arises again, call on me - I will stand beside you - swinging iron, until all the heads have rolled.

My fear is that the award - any award - will increase rather than decrease the abuses under which you suffered.

Among the many reasons I despise mainstream theatre is the damage it has done its staff, all in the interests of social justice and fair play and equity and any other piece of slimy nonsense that the industrial regulatory system has given. There is real hated here, and I should stop writing now...

Wye aye 'n thanks mate!

Wye aye Noel! I did storm the battlements & win out on the day, with the aid of the 'Great Onion' [MEAA].

The 'Rogue 'n vogabond was reduced to a less sturdy beggar, some what head 'n tail less & sent forth from whence he came'.

The 'iron' was aptly put, as my ancestors weapon of chioce was the the double headed battle axe. Being celtic gallowglasses known as the 'Helmented [hooded] ones', with a motto [battlecry] of "Aut vincere aut mori" [To conquer or die].

This game is frought with cony's & very easily over salted with plauseable ratbags. Hence the need to count ones fingers each time after shaking thier hand.
