Series Two of 2009 Play Readings

Venue: Old Mill Theatre, Mends Street, South Perth

This year’s play reading sessions at The Old Mill theatre will cover a range of theatrical styles. Having enjoyed reading and hearing a modern play in May, our July reading takes us right back to the classics with Medea, by Euripides.

For many of us, this is one of the plays we either have never read, or haven’t read for a long time, and feel a bit embarrassed we don’t know the play better. For some it will be an old favourite. Like many of the Greek classics Medea deals with the big themes of human existence, in this case love, betrayal, revenge and grief.

There are a number of translations and adaptations of Medea available. Reading co-ordinator for Medea, Susan Lynch, has chosen one version in a traditional style and one in a modern style. We will read half from one script and half in the other – not something we can usually do on stage but a really good opportunity to compare.

This play has a number of great roles for men and women and should make a really stirring read! Experience the great classical, tragical, theatrical emotions…and have a nice cup of tea and a bikkie with theatre friends old and new!! Who could ask for more!
