A friendly reminder that there is only 1 week left for playwrights to submit their one act plays into the Garrick 2009 One Act Play Competition - now titled "The Charlie Gregorini One Act Play Competition" (see media release below).

To those who have registered and not submitted yet, get cracking - 3 June is the deadline.
To those who are interested - register with Melanie DeCull at TAZ Entertainment - taz@tazentertainment.com.au - supplying your name, contact ph and postal address.

Three plays will be selected and allocated an experienced director for a season at Garrick and then possibly entered into the State One Act Drama Festivals... The three plays selected will each receive AU$500 in prize money.

Garrick Theatre Dedicates One Act Play Competition to the late Mayor Charlie Gregorini.

With a current prize pool of $1500 to be equally divided amongst the three selected plays, Guildford’s Garrick Theatre Club has been hard at work coordinating their inaugural playwright competition. The enthusiastic response has been overwhelming with playwrights registering their interest as far as the United States and Ireland.

Permission was sought from the widow and family of the much loved and highly respected Mayor Charlie Gregorini to allow Garrick Theatre to preserve his memory for future years, by dedicating the playwright competition to him.

Sandra Gregorini was thrilled with Garrick’s proposal, “my family and I are delighted to have Charlie commemorated by the Garrick Theatre in this way. Garrick Theatre and the people involved with it have always had a special place in Charlie’s heart. Over the years we both enjoyed attending many performances in Guildford and have seen the Garrick Theatre grow and expand to what it is today.”

Coordinators Bruce Denny and Melanie DeCull have had their work cut out for them with an unexpected global response.

Denny says “from the onset we knew we’d have interest Australia-wide. We thought in coming years we could promote overseas, however the international interest in our first year is a strong indication how much playwrights are enthusiastic for more opportunities.”

DeCull talks about the wide reaching interest, “to date we’ve had 176 playwrights register their interest, of which 62 alone from Western Australia and 10 collectively from overseas.”
DeCull light heartedly continues, “any spare time the five competition readers had, has evaporated, yet they are enthused in being part of the selection committee on choosing the most suitable plays for Garrick’s intimate stage.”

Three selected plays will be chosen to perform in the Charlie Gregorini One Act Season, with the possibility of submission into the State One Act Drama Festivals in Perth and Bunbury.

The deadline for play submissions is June 3 including registrations of interest from prospective directors, assistant directors and stage managers. The three winning entries will be announced on Friday 3 July, with the formal celebrations and presentations taking place at the Garrick Theatre in Guildford on Saturday 11 July.

Interested playwrights and production crew will need to register by contacting Melanie DeCull ph (08) 9255 3336 or via email melaniedecull@tazentertainment.com.au to receive their information pack.

The Garrick Theatre welcome further sponsorship and support from local businesses in this inaugural event.
