10 Things I love about the ITA

I work in finance - an industry which is having the guts kicked out of it at the moment. My day is full of doom and gloom news and frankly, if I didn't have a positive outlook, it'd be razor blades and warm baths (I'm sure some of you wish I'd embraced that path). On top of that you open the newspaper and it's war, depression, teenage drug deaths, and sporting results that have gone the wrong way. Theatre is my escape and the last thing I need is logging onto a website and seeing more doom, gloom, horror and pessimism surrounding the thing I love. So....I think I've let the harbingers of doom and gloom have their say about the ITA. I have entertained their ideas - dismissed most of them because of the emotive way they were promulgated and in some instances thought "Y'know, that's a good point". But I'm sick of negativity for now. Here's your challenge. Let's build a list of 10 things we LIKE about the ITA. Good positive stuff so we can emerge from the morass of depressive comment that has held sway here in recent times. Just 10. Make 'em good, make 'em factual, but above all - make 'em bright. Seeing as I've started the thread I heartily endorse that in the spirit of positivity we moderate ANY negativity out of existence. You wanna do that? Start your own bloody thread!! O.k, I'll kick it off...... 1) I'm grateful that this website exists as an ITA initiative because it keeps me in touch with what's happening in community theatre here in Perth. Over to you guys....

2) DRAMAFEST. Each year the ITA organised this one-act competition/showcase, where directors, actors and playwrights can present their works, and receive invaluable feedback from a professional adjudicator. It lets us get out and about, perform at different venues, make some contacts, and catch up with old friends. One act plays, in my theatre at least, are the training ground for aspiring writers and directors. www.meltheco.org.au

3) KERRI HILTON!!! One of the most committed and beloved driving forces behind Community Theatre in this town. A woman of absolute dedication and unquestionable integrity. Someone who does so much work behind the scenes, it would take an army to replace her. (Good luck with drafting said army!) Top idea, MurraytheWorry! J

I'd just like to add my voice to reason number one. I'm not a Perth person, not involved in community theatre; but am extremely grateful for the opportunity this site brings to learn, discuss and meet. 10 years of this site running is no small feat! I'm with Na, I live in Adelaide but get ideas and inspiration from this site so I also support no1. Is that all there is? Well if that's all there is my friend, then let's keep dancing. www.tonymoore.id.au

6) On a Personal Level

6) I know this is one many people will have wanted to add, but I had to get in first. I'm grateful for this site because it helped me take my first steps into Perth's community theatre, er... community. And like most people around this place... Life wouldn't be worth living if I couldn't do this for a lark. freddie the rocking jedi badger

5) INTERACT

(Yes I know "5" was already taken - but I'm choosing to ignore the "Hot Chicks" bs.)

INTERACT - I remember spending a weekend partaking in interactive lectures and workshops on pretty much all aspects of theatre at the Kalamunda Ag. College.

This was pretty much my introduction to the ITA s an organisation, and boy was I impressed.

Knowing from past experience in the music industry just how much it costs to get "professional" advice or help, (let alone "hands on" assistance), it seemed to me as if the ITA must have outlaid a small fortune to allow me and so many other theatre devotees the opportunity to be advised by some of the best known Stage Managers, Lighting Technicians, Directors, Actors, Dramaturgs and Fight Choreo's Perth had to offer. Coupled with this was the chance to make friends with an amazing array of people from local and country clubs, from complete novices to seasoned veterans. As it happens, they did outlay a small fortune, so much so that it hasn't happened since.

To me it is a shame that "INTERACT" as a weekender has been financially unviable for the ITA for some years now, but suggestions by one of our "outer" clubs may just see it back soon and I for one can't wait!!

7) They're a really good Resource

They will help and advise clubs who have questions or problems with their Constitutions, or other legal matters. They will help with things like insurance. They have an extensive Library of play scripts from which Clubs and individuals may borrow. I guess that's really three things I love about them. Sue.

That's what horrible purple jumpers do to us

Purple People Facts...

I counted only two items of attire that could be deemed "purple" one of which was a jacket (labrug's) and the other, (cal's) though it  may be a jumper,  is a long way from being horrible...

I feel unwell - you trying to line up for a new award jmuzz?
jmuzzFri, 6 Feb 2009, 06:42 pm

Can't help your ill feeling

What's made you ill David - have your comments of last week proved indigestible? What's your beef? Does your stomach churn just because someone tries to send a warm fuzzy the way of an organisation made up of VOLUNTEERS (yep, unpaid and unappreciated by a minority of people)? If that's the case - I'm sad for you man. Y'see, I don't give a damn about awards - really don't. I could live happily without the Finleys or awards at Dramafest or what have you. I have no interest in getting professional recognition and I simply hope that people come and enjoy the show and if they do, perhaps mention it to me afterwards. That's it. YOU on the other hand seem to be the one who's uppity about the whole awards concept. Don't tar me with your brush buddy - that's YOUR bag, not mine. And I'm unsure how suggesting people say positive things about the ITA translates to brownie points as far as awards go. Can you elaborate on that one? Mind you, having seen an adjudication of a performance I did a few years back in kalgoorlie, slavish praise of the ITA, the adjudicators and the world at large may be my only chance at winning one ;) I suck as an actor - I'm the first to admit it - it worries me not a jot. But having been part of a past ITA committee I know what a thankless bloody task it is and I think kicking people (metaphorically)who are volunteering their time to run things for other people's benefit is poor form old son. Now, given you appreciated my feedback on your performance last year (did I mention I know who you are?), why is that so hard to understand? Swallow a healthy dose of pride - that should help your illness.

That's between me and him

And no offence but I wouldn't share with unregistereds anyway. I don't see the need for anyone to be unregistered.

Thanks Murray

Not ill Murray - although I am still recovering from colon cancer; who knows I maybe gone soon anyway. You don't suck as an actor Murray - I saw a very strong performance from you last year. I look forward to see what you put forth in 2009. I think that the ITA has done a Stirling job and should be recognised for the effort and tribulations of many selfless assistants - promotion of theatre is always positive; no matter who is attempting to do so and in what manner or fashion. I look forward to seeing you all at Romeo & Juliet in the park and maybe even at the AGM. If the answer is yes, then where is the challenge? DW
Walter PlingeSat, 7 Feb 2009, 12:26 pm

You mean they've only done

You mean they've only done a good job in the City of Stirling, as opposed to doing a sterling job everywhere?
Walter PlingeSat, 7 Feb 2009, 12:59 pm

Glad you're getting better
