The 2008 Finleys promise to be the best yet, already they're causing a stir and getting some people really excited. Let's face it whatever happens its a great dress up night, time to chat, socialise and clap until your hands are sore.... it's a time to congratulate those lucky few who have got an award to treasure for years to come, because on the night they did really well and excelled, something those of us who are serious about Community Theatre will always strive to do, whether we win an award or not. See you there at the Lady Wardle Performing Arts Centre, St Mary's Anglican Girl School, Elliott Rd, Karrinyup on Saturday January 17, 2009 doors open 6pm for a 7pm start. Further information can be gained by emailing itaperth@gmail.com - Tickets $22 Bookings 9335 2255 or itaperth@gmail.com - paypal payments available.

I'm looking forward to all

I'm looking forward to all the nudity!
Walter PlingeMon, 12 Jan 2009, 10:39 pm

What? Your own

What? Your own nudity? Remind me to pack my magnifying glass!
Walter PlingeTue, 13 Jan 2009, 10:48 am

Surprise me!

Hmmm...What kind of surprises? Strippers perhaps?
Walter PlingeTue, 13 Jan 2009, 03:47 pm

Surprises? I can't imagine

Surprises? I can't imagine anything more surprising than some of the nominations!
Walter PlingeWed, 14 Jan 2009, 08:15 am

Surprises

Nope, I'm more surprised about the people that didn't get nominated. I guess these awards are more about how popular the performer is.
Walter PlingeWed, 14 Jan 2009, 08:23 am

Or whether the adjudicators

Or whether the adjudicators have grudges against some performers.
Walter PlingeWed, 14 Jan 2009, 09:33 am

Look, if you guys want to

Look, if you guys want to do the anonymous bitching thing, at least go the whole nine yards and name names - who do you think got overlooked? At least provoke a discussion while you're being vaguely pathetic and hiding behind a pseudonym.

Doubt it

Not likely. If that were so I would have been nominated as I know and am at least on good terms (if not friends) with most if not all of the adjudicators.

So with that sort of connection, why was I not nominated? Well, there is really only two reasons. Either I was Crap in the two shows I did last year, or I was not quite good enough when compared to the rest of the competition. Am I upset? Is my nose put out of joint?

No. I'm not in this 'business' to win awards (although it would be nice ;-) ) - I am in it because I love it. The Finley's in my mind, while it may attract conceit, slander and egos, is a great way of encouraging quality theatre around the state.

Let's face it, no matter how much any of us have a passion for theatre, we all would love to be told you are doing great. We all (even the Walters and the Trolls) like to have their egos stroked in some way. The accolades of the audience, the camaraderie (and mutual back-slapping) of a show, the positive reviews and even the odd award here and there. We never like being told we are crap, boring or such. However, no matter who you are, how well you do, you will always get a share of each.

The Finley's are not the be-end-and-be-all of theatre recognition. They are simply another source, something to aim for, a measure of quality. That's all. There can be only one "winner" at the end of the day and yet that is not to say that they are the best. They may have been better on the day.

These days, the difference between Best Show and Second best (or even third, fourth or fifth best) is such a small margin because we are all turning out some great stuff - BECAUSE WE WANT TO!!

For myself, I was very happy with the shows I performed in. I have also seen a few shows and born witness to some wonderful performances. I would dread to be the person who has to decide who gets into the top 5 let alone top place, and not only because of the amount of back-lash these decisions inevitably create.

I've said my piece.

The nomination debate

Seems abundantly clear that these anonymous people are either disgruntled ego-monkeys who didn't get a nomination or related to disgruntled ego-monkeys who didn't get nominated. Seriously, get over it! It's so very very simple - if you don't like the Finleys, p**s off and do something else Saturday night and let the rest of us enjoy the occasion. Or better still - if you're such a great appraiser of theatre, volunteer to be a Finley adjudicator and then you can arrange to have all your friends nominated in future can't you? (tongue firmly in cheek). To suggest that someone wasn't nominated because they weren't on good terms with the adjudicators suggests you are on bad terms with a LOT of people because there are 4 adjudicators on the panel and they're a pretty diverse bunch. Perhaps it's your attitude that needs adjusting and not the adjudicators? If you Walters whinge as much in real life as you do on this website it's unsurprising people don't gravitate to you.

OK. I'm over it ) But I

OK. I'm over it :o) But I still want to see the strippers!

Jeff, I saw you in one of

Jeff, I saw you in one of the two shows you did last year and let me assure you, you were NOT crap. Far from it, in fact, and you are firmly on my list of people I'd like to work with one of these days. I actually thought you probably would indeed pick up a nomination, but you didn't and that's all there is to it. I didn't get one this year either, but I feel the same about it as you do. I don't do what I do because I want to win awards, for goodness' sake! Anybody who does is doing it for the wrong reasons. It is nice to receive awards, of course, but I get just as much pleasure out of seeing others recognised for their efforts, especially if I'd witnessed their performances and agreed that they were pretty special. Of course there are always going to be many who miss out. That's just a fact of life that we all have to accept. And I suppose there are always going to be those disgruntled souls who just can't accept it. You watch, NEXT year we'll see the same sort of anonymous sniping as we're seeing here this year . . . and that we saw LAST year. Perhaps that's just another fact of life that we all have to accept - just the usual inconsequential dross that's better ignored. I'm looking forward to a great night out on Saturday. See you there!
