Hi Temp colouring for 500w halogen work lights
Mon, 1 Dec 2008, 07:09 amI have purchased some of these rectangular shaped halogen work lights. They operate at hi temp (500w lamps). I am contemplating colouring blue. Clear lacquer on the glass will burn, gels equally will melt (unless sandwiched between hi temp glasses). Any one have any thoughts? For discussion please....

Silicone!
Hi Peter,
What about coating the glass in a thin layer of silicone? You might even be able to dye the silicone a bit darker (not sure what with though...)
Any other ideas?

Hi temp gels perhaps?
Hi temp gels perhaps?
I've used those lights before in theatre and managed to get away with it by mounting the gel outside the mesh grille that comes with the light (it's spaced off about an inch) which was enough to stop the gels melting. Make sure you cut the gel oversize so you don't get open white spill around the edges.
If it's for a long term job, perhaps you could replace the glass with a dichroic glass in the colour you want. If you're going to do that though, you're probably best just buying a proper flood.
