South West One Act Drama Festival - Award Results

The annual South West One Act Drama Festival, presented by Bunbury Repertory Club was held on September 13 & 14 this year at the New Lyric Theatre (home of the Bunbury Musical Comedy Group).

It was held at the New Lyric Theatre as the Little Theatre in Molloy Street is temporarily unavailable. Approximately 200 people attended over the weekend, some attended only 1 session, others went for the whole weekend and saw almost very play.

The Adjudicator this year was John Senczuk and the awards were present by the Mayor David Smith.
The Junior Session was held Saturday morning, There were 4 entries from 3 local clubs.
The Senior session was Saturday afternoon & evening and Sunday morning. There were 12 entries from 9 clubs. There were 2 local entries, the Bunbury Repertory Club and Donnybrook Theatre Group, both were original plays by local playwright.

Why was the New Lyric

Why was the New Lyric Theatre built in the middle of an industrial area? No wonder attendances were so poor. If you didn't know where it was, you'd never know it was there. Plus there's nothing else around in the way of facilities.

SW One Act Festival - Response

Hi there... For a one act festival held in Bunbury, where the immediate theatre masses interested in the one act arena are some 2 hours away. I believe that approx 200 people in attendance is excellent. Yes, Dannielle Ashton did co-direct and was the main director for "A One Night Stand Off"... the information provided above, is the list directly from the organisers of the South West One Act Festival. Congratulations to all - and congratulations to Danni who had 2 of her shows do so well at the festival. Roll on DramaFest, this will be interesting - I can't wait!! DramaFest is on at the Old Mill Theatre this year - September 26-28. Fri 26th @ 7pm, Sat 27th @ 10am, 2pm, 7pm and Sun 28th 10am with the awards Sunday 6pm - Adjudicator: Jeremy Rice. Melz

BMCG were homeless - at the time!

If I remember correctly?

The 'BMCG' purchased the building in the the 90's. When they got the heave ho out of their home, they had for some 30 years, at the Paisley Centre. Because the shopping centre wished to extend & the group had to move on.

At the time there were little or any buildings available, until 7 Bourke Street became available & they purchased it.

The building had been used as a Boxing Gym for some time.

By the way Steven,they are listed in the local phone book (08) 9791 4696 & thier info is also here on this site?

So I don't see what the problem was in finding them?

As for area facilities they are not that far out of town & I bet the parking was easier than that at the 'Little Theatre'.

New Lyric Theatre

Right. I have to jump in here. The Lyric Theatre is HANDS DOWN the nicest community theatre I have ever been to - and I've been to a few! I spoke with the people running the bar (who were committee members for BMCG) and they were very welcoming and even showed my partner and I their new upstairs addition - the dance hall. I think, considering that this was not their event, they were extremely accommodating and generous to audience attending. Their theatre has given me back the drive to start campaigning for my local theatre group to get its own home again. Note - I'm not in any way linked to the Bunbury Rep, Lyric Theatre, organisers of the SW One-Act. - I was there as an audience member only, not a performer, and was not affiliated with any performers or clubs entering. I know! i was there to support local theatre and for an entertaining weekend. SHOCK HORROR! Thanks Bunbury Musical & Comedy Group. Without your venue there wouldve been no festival at all.

And on it being in an industrial area. Probably most affordable and suitable building size around.

BMCG from memory

I directed the last production at the Paisley Centre in town, which was 'Brigadoon'. During that time they purchased the Bourke street property, with a bank loan. I think it was round $100 000, which was cheap for a two storey building in Bunbury at the time.

I helped along with a heap of other volunteers to refurbish it & turn it to a theatre.

They utilised all their members empirical knowledge & trade skills. Also aggressively seeking out sponsorships from supply companies, if not as a direct donation, but on a very cut price or wholesale basis. They had a well orginsed building team & site mangement structure in place.

They are a great mob & everyone chipped in to get it up & running in very short order. At the time the upstairs was used to house their extensive costume collection.

I believe they were able to pay it off, within a short period of time - The land now must be worth a mint!
