FANCY a cuppa? Head to the City of Fremantle's Biggest Morning Tea on Thursday, May 22, and help raise money for cancer research. Between 10am and 11am, a $2 donation will get you that quintessential caffeine fix, fresh steaming tea and an assortment of tasty biscuits donated by Culley’s Tearooms in Fremantle. Fremantle Mayor Peter Tagliaferri will be on hand in the City of Fremantle reception room, ready to serve people morning tea in the name of a good cause. All money raised goes to Cancer Council Australia, an organisation supporting cancer research, prevention and patient support. Last year, almost $9 million was raised with morning teas across Australia, funding more than 200 research grants. Mayor Tagliaferri said fundraising events such as these were important, as they highlighted the efforts of Cancer Council Australia and allowed people to do their bit for cancer research as well. “At some point in our lives, we will be touched by the effects of cancer, whether through personal illness or the loss of a loved relative, friend or colleague,” he said. “I’ve recently had my own experience with cancer, after having a malignant melanoma removed from my shoulder, and I understand how distressing it can be for the people close to you. “But something as simple as a morning tea allows us to come together to make a collective contribution in doing something positive. “This is a chance to take time out from the office, university, shopping – or whatever you may be doing – to be with your friends, family and workmates and have a cuppa for cancer research.” The City of Fremantle’s Biggest Morning Tea will held in the reception room in the City of Fremantle administration building – enter through the curved white staircase opposite Myer in Kings Square, between 10am and 11am, Thursday, May 22.
