Until now, the Theatre Australia site has been used by actors, community theatre companies and the general public as a wonderful free service. It gives an opportunity for the interested, irrespective of income or status, to have an independent say.

Has the time come for any commercial enterprise, which is not a theatre company producing shows but which charges people to be one of their members  - or to register on their site – to be charged a nominal sum, like $199 per year, to put their name or shortcuts on the free Theatre .asn site?

Perhaps Grant or the ITA

Perhaps Grant or the ITA should be answering this one. Mini-monster puppets customised just for you! at Puppets in Melbourne

Thanks Gordon

I'll put it on the agenda to discuss at the next meeting. I know that it has been considered before. Kimberley

Why?

Thanks for raising this issue Gordon.

This month marks the tenth anniversary of the launch of this website and it's probably appropriate to revisit this issue again - along with whole range of other concerns.

But I think your specific question is best answered by starting with the question "why?" In all seriousness!

Why would we seek to charge some people and not others?

And, almost as importantly, why would people or organisations think it worthwhile to pay?

Regards
Grant

$199 may be "nominal" to

$199 may be "nominal" to you Gordon, but it isn't to me. And the presence of my website on this site has earned me nothing. Is that all there is? Well if that's all there is my friend, then let's keep dancing. www.tonymoore.id.au

It depends... I receive

It depends... I receive many hits a day from this site to my own. But that's only because my signature includes my link: hits never come from having it listed as a group/company link. I think $199 is an exaggeration. Something like $10 or $15 a year is similar to what other sites would charge. (I'm not saying I agree or disagree with charging for links/profiles. I'm not sure what I think of it) Mini-monster puppets customised just for you! at Puppets in Melbourne

To fee or not to fee

Logos and Na may have company links, but they have made it obvious over the years that they are truly interested and involved with the well-being and future of the theatre, and most of us would have been unaware of the commercial side.

I too think that $199 is not really nominal, but when solely commercial and unproductive sites are advertising individual membership for 'only' 25 cents a day - or $99 per year - on this FREE site, then they would probably think that $199 is cheap.

If every magazine, agency, night club etc started dumping their names all over the site it would become a shambles, and think, would they allow Theatre.asn to put numerous ads in every area / copy of their site or publication free of charge?

There is an issue here that

There is an issue here that you've touched on, but we may have assumed: that there would be a publishing policy, which would dictate what ads/links/companies are appropriate or not. Again, more of a question for Grant and the ITA. Mini-monster puppets customised just for you! at Puppets in Melbourne

At least one site that I

At least one site that I regularly use in the US has a rule that registered members cannot profit from posts personally although they can advise other members of good deals and so on provided they have no vested interest. Others must pay to advertise on that site and there are very few who do. I pay (voluntarily) $40US a year to be a member of that site, all my money gets me is a little logo under my name that says "supporter" but the money helps run the site. This would not stop people from advertising shows and auditions. I don't think it's a bad idea. Mind you to post on that site you must register. With regards to my above point, to me $40 is nominal, $200 isn't but where does each of us draw that line? Is that all there is? Well if that's all there is my friend, then let's keep dancing. www.tonymoore.id.au

Haven't seen that one

Haven't seen that one before. From the looks of it, it's very new ... they're also using the same program I used back in the days of The Prompt Copy website... Interesting. Mini-monster puppets customised just for you! at Puppets in Melbourne
