Writers in US go on strike
Tue, 6 Nov 2007, 05:07 pmAnybody been watching the news, and how the American Writers Guild has gone on strike? They want more money, understandably. I was watching SBS and they were saying that writers currently get 20% of profits from movies and TV shows, because they cut themselves out of royalties from VHS (way back when people thought videos would kill the industry).
It's interesting - if only because the writers here in Australia would never think of going on strike. I guess we're all too used to having crappy rights and royalties, that we just take it for granted.
Wonder what would happen if the AWG here went on strike? Would Neighbours last more than a few months? Or Home and Away crash?
The sad thing is that the most likely outcome here would be a couple of news items the first day (at the end of the news program, between the cute new zoo baby, and the sports announcements), and then the strike would completely fall off the face of the earth, as both writers and audiences realise that no one cares about Aussie writers.
