Harmony Week hits the right note at Fremantle Village Art Market
Wed, 7 Mar 2007, 04:52 pmAS PART of Harmony Week, the Fremantle Village Art Market is embracing the harmony theme on Thursday, March 15.
Held in Fremantle’s Kings Square from 10am to 5.30pm, the ever-popular market day is already renowned for its lunchtime concerts, kids’ crafts and percussion workshops, adding to the vibrant open-air atmosphere.
Fremantle Mayor Peter Tagliaferri will officially launch the harmony events at 12.15pm, embracing the week’s key message “connect outside the square and make a world of difference” and the themes of justice, equality, fairness and friendship.
Market day will feature a plethora of entertainment and fun, including:
• Kora Community Dance Theatre performing The Quest for the Teardrop Basket, a live theatre, dance, poetry and music performance about initiation.
• World music from Mukti, a fusion of north Indian, jazz and western classical music, full of fast tempos, complex rhythms and improvisations.
• Free basket-making workshops with local artists Lynne Marshell and Sophia Zielinski, using traditional indigenous methods with local grasses and textiles.
• The Styrene Family, a special Year 4-5 play on recycling from Fremantle Primary School.
“Harmony Week is an international celebration of cultural diversity, which originally began as Harmony Day, in reaction to the horrors of the Sharpeville massacre in South Africa,” Market Coordinator Kylie Wheatley said.
“The aim is to encourage people to take a stand against racism, help build a peaceful, productive future and make the most of racial, cultural, social and religious diversity.
“The Fremantle Village Art Market is an ideal place to celebrate all these things because there’s such a vibe in Kings Squarewhen the market is on every Thursday with its wonderfully eclectic mix.”
The Fremantle Village Art Market will operate every Thursday until April 26, 2007.
