Where to go in Melbourne.
Thu, 1 Feb 2007, 07:17 pmI want to move to Melbourne around June of this year to get some city theatre experience, does anybody know where or if there is a particular spot that I should go? I want to be able to be in an area that has some local theatre groups that I could try and become involved with. Any thoughts would be much appreciated. Cheers.

Where in the city? CBD? Do you want to be involved in a theatre group, a venue, amateur groups?
I could easily give you some advice, but if you tell us where you'll be, and what you want to do (acting, tech?), I can give the advice that would be much more specific.

Where in Melbourne
CBD would be great, more expensive, but great. I want to get involved in more theatre work, seeing theatre, being in theatre, being behind theatre. Would CBD be any good for that? Or do you know of any other place that could be more beneficial? Any info is much appreciated. Cheers. :)

For seeing theatre in the
For seeing theatre in the CBD, there are a few places. The Malthouse in Southbank (near VCA), MTC, the Vic Arts Centre. I'd also suggest Fortyfive Downstairs, as it's a great venue with lots of local fringe and smaller company productions. I'd also suggest La Mama in Carlton, and The Store Room (Northcote, so not quite in CBD). Gasworks in Albert Park is also a good venue. Red Stitch Actors in St Kilda produce some great shows, with a wonderfully cosy venue.
I'd also suggest checking out theatre from the universities; often a cheap way of seeing some theatre, as well as being able to check out the local courses/campuses, and meet some like-minded people. Swinburne, VCA, Monash; all produce regular performances.
If you are keen on getting involved, I suggest volunteering for any of the local festivals. The Midsumma (Gay and Lesbian) festival is on at the moment, and the Comedy Festival is coming up. (Trades Hall is another great venue during festival times, as well as Nth Melb Town Hall, and the Melb Town Hall). Fringe Festival is an excellent time of year to volunteer.
If you want to take part in some amateur companies, I'd suggest finding one local to you; though Malvern Theatre Company is the one I recommend the most.
There are heaps of fringe and co-op groups floating around, and if you are keen to volunteer your time, keep your eyes peeled for ads here and elsewhere.
Basically, it's just a matter of finding the right group for you - just hunt around. There's lots going on!
