Wed, 27 Dec 2006, 03:45 pmAmateur Theatre in the UK is alive and kicking. There is something called the Little Theatre Association which is a loose organisation of amateur groups that own their own theatres. Every town you live in will have it's own group or groups with a wide range of standards and styles.
Pro: Get in touch with Equity and also subscribe to The Stage as Na suggests. Some auditions for pro shows will be open and there are many other ways into the industry through TIE for example. Small scale pro tours are huge. The LOndon Fringe, mostly cooperative, is thriving but you have to be careful who you work with/for.
Drama schools: In London yes there is RADA and Guildhall and LAMBDA and Central School and Mountview and Arts Educational etc etc etc. Na is right about Rose Bruford in Guilford in Kent, very good school.
Many of the Universities have good Drama courses. There is a secondary school of Drama in Kent sorry can't remember the name. Most BTEC colleges (rough equivalent of TAFE) teach drama courses as well.
Get yourself a copy of 2007 "Contacts". It's a book of info about Theatres, Companies, Agents, and anything else you might want. I always had a copy in my ten years there. You can actually buy it online from Amazon.co.uk if you want to before you go.
I worked as a technician so my knowledge of the acting world is a little thinner.
Aussie's are generally quite welcome in Britain I found. They are very popular employees in Pubs etc and as theatre techs. If you intend to act in UK though you will need to develop a good RP (Received Pronunciation). It is what is or used to be described as BBC English.
I could keep going for pages.
Good luck. It's a great place if you don't weaken. Never got used to the sense of humour though.
Is that all there is? Well if that's all there is my friend, then let's keep dancing.
