Hi Guys, I have had numerous problems on this site lately which makes me think that hackers have infiltrated my system. I dont know alot about computers and my comment may sound really stupid. I have a imac and while posting the other day my post came up with someone elses photo and name. I apologised cos I have no idea how it happened. I reported it immediately to the administrator but have not heard back. This site is very unstable on my imac and it doesnt matter if I use safari or internet explorer. actually explorer is worse Some really weird things have been happening. What I want to know is, can someone access and use your computer and you dont know it and post on this forum or are they accessing all my data on my computer. Is there an explanation anyone.

One solution

Computer Security

Have you changed your password recently? If another individual knows your password, they can take your identity and make posting on your behalf. I recommend that you first try ro change your password.

Yes, hackers can "enter" your PC. It has happend to me. They need to have your direct IP Address and other details which is maintained by your Service Provider (SP). They will also need to get past any firewalls. Security is a pretty tough thing to crack these days, but it not impossible. There are things you can do to ensure your PC is inaccessible. Much of this advice can be provided by your SP. Simple things like  not opening suspicious e-mails or e-mail attachments which can carry Trojan Software, or Spyware is a common sense type thing. Get your PC Checked out for any potential Trojan Virus or Spyware infections. These packages can give hackers direct access to your PC when online.

Do not go online whenever you use the PC. Only when you need the Internet. By having a idle internet connection running in the background, you increase the chances of invasion.

Poster ID

As for the unusual posting issue, the does sound somewhat strange. To me it has the ring of Crossed Lines of Communication, which can happen from time to time although extremely rare. If these problems are regular, then there could be an issue between your PC, your Internet Service Provider, right down the line to this site's server.

If others are experiencing the same types of issues, then it would be on the site. If you are isolated in these experiences, then it would more than likely be your PC or Service Provider.

Logging in

Occassionally the site does accidentally log you in as someone else. This can be fixed. First it's always a good idea to let the site admin know - you've done that, and it's likely that Grant is busy and will be on top of it asap. Bugs are incredibly hard to find and fix, and website admin can take a while. Secondly, try closing your browsers, deleting your cookies, clear your internet history (all can be done by going to Internet Options in IE), and then come back to the site. This may help from your end, and clear out any issues in your computer/browser. You may also want to try pressing CTRL+Refresh button, which clears out any 'cached' (saved) history of your internet surfing... Finally - and here I'm speaking generally, and not for Grant - these sorts of things happen occassionally to every site. Things go wrong for a myriad of reasons, and some of them can be fixed quickly, some can't. This site is run on free software, which means that there may be security holes which will be plugged as the software is developed; having said that I don't believe this site is inherently unsafe; just that hackers/spammers are very good at what they do. Yes, there are spammers on this site every now and then. If you get an email in your inbox from someone you don't know/the text seems rather vague - then DON'T REPLY. This is a spammer, and you should report them immediately to the site admin. I'm sure I'll get told off by Grant, because somewhere I've written something incorrect, but I'm just trying to explain things from an web admin's point of view.
