I'm not 100% sure this is the right place to post this query - forgive me if it's not...

My daughter has got the role of Ragged Blossom in the end-of-year school musical, Snugglepot and Cuddlepie.

And guess who now has the task of coming up with a Ragged blossom costume :)

Help!

We're in Mandurah.  I have done a websearch in W.A. in the hope of finding some place that has one and will hire it out - I have sent email queries but not heard back yet.  Then thought someone here might know...

It's the costume for Ragged Blossom - my daughter is on the tall side for a 9 year old and wears a size 12 (children's size 12 that is) or a 14 if it's a small 14 or can be pinned to make tighter... or in adult sizing she can wear a 6 or an 8 and pin it.

So - can anyone help?  Any ideas?

thanks!

or you could ask Prompt Corner. Diana Waldron would be the person to talk to there, on 9385 9456. they put on S&C last year. But they are in Perth's Northern suburbs, so it might be a bit far for you depending on how often you come to Perth. Cheers

MPAC

It might be worth seeing what types of costumes they have at the performing arts centre (mandurah)...i heard they hire out cossies for $15 a day (or close to it). I doubt they will have what you are looking for exactly but maybe something that could be adapted.

MPAC costume hire

Thanks Sky,  I did ask them but they couldn't help... so far each place I've tried has not been able to help and some I've emailed I've not yet heard back from... looks like I'll have to learn to sew real quick :)

Isn't she a bit fairy like?

My memory is pretty hazy but isn't Ragged Blossom a bit fairy like? Do you have Spotlight shops where you are? They sell "fairy" outfits which consist of a cheapo leotard, a gauzy overskirt, wings etc. All quite cheaply, less than $20.00 You could easily make it a bit raggedy with judicious tearing. Actually any KMart or similar usually sell "dress up" stuff. Have a prowl, you may be inspired! Good luck! "Papa, where is Mama? They tell me she has gone away, where is she?"

Rapunzels costume idea

Oh, THANK YOU... you've given me a great idea... IF I can't hire one and have to come up with something myself (shock! horror!) my daughter DOES already have an old fairy costume and if memory serves me well it is some kind of an orange colour and it already IS ripped... I certainly can use that I think... now just have to think how I'd do the hat.

I'm told Ragged Blossom does NOT have a "nut" hat like Snugglepot and Cuddlepie - because she's not a nut, she's a blossom (as all girls are, naturally :)) Does anyone know what it looks like or should look like?  I saw some vague photo on the web - but the photo wasn't very good - just looked like lots of yellow - but yellow what and does it cover the entire head or is it on some kind of a head band or ?

Any other creative folks on line like to have a go with some suggestions here?  And feel free again, Rapunzel - I really appreciate it and thank you again!

Cheers,

Thanks Luke!

A million thanks for this lead, Luke!  Much appreciated and I will definitely be calling Diana.  So far the only places online I"ve found in WA that "might" lead to a costume involves Barking Gheko who I've emailed and a website involving some guy's name which I think had Spicer or something in it - he said he knows where it can be obtained but so far won't tell me for reasons unknown :)  So I will be calling Diana in the morning!

Cheers!

Ragged Blossom costume

i suggest you search ragged blossom on the net, or snugglepot & cuddlepie books. The top could just be a T-shirt cut into triangles at the bottom and put a net petticoat underneath it or the fairy costume as you already said. The top should be green and the skirt which is just petals a pink, or yellow or red or something pretty. You could make the skirt out of crepe paper petals which are basically elongated semi-circles, or you could use a firmer material from a fabric shop, even tulle would do, as you can cut it and it doesn't fray. For the hat, use an old baseball cap to give you the head coverage. take off the peak (which is easy to do, just cut it off), cover it in fabric in a green to make it look like an upside down bud, then buy some felt, (get it by the metre from spotlight or somewhere) and cut petal shapes as described earlier. These can be glued on underneath the base (use a clear craft glue, but use plenty of glue, or simply tack on.) Then us a few green tiangles to make it look like a calyx and put over the top of the petals. email me if you need anymore info. Chris Cheers Christine Ellis

She's a red gum blossom

Which means she's got lots of spiky red stamens with little yellow tips. Looks a bit like a small bottle brush. She could have some sort of hat thing mad like that. There are some good pictures on the net. Is that all there is? Well if that's all there is my friend, then let's keep dancing. www.tonymoore.id.au

Thanks Christine

Wow, are YOU full of great ideas!  Sounds like you've been there, done that or you're into sewing! :)  And you're the second person to mention Spotlight to me... I don't know if we have one in Mandurah but figure now is a good time to find out!

thanks!

Thanks for hat ideas!

thanks Logos and everyone else... I have been looking on the internet and become a bit confused because I"ve seen different outfits but have a good idea what she's to look like... I'll try and keep it close to May Gibb's version because Snugglepot and Cuddlepie are being "made" to look close to the orig versions too... this is why I thought it would be easier if I could hire one :)

Yep there is spotlight in

Yep there is spotlight in Mandurah. Its on Gordon Road (the old Makro store) and it is HUGE. Ive got an idea for the hat...honestly it was mums idea as i was a snugglepot or cuddlepie one year at school. She used tulle (i think thats how you spell it - you know the stuff they use on ballet tu-tus) as the flowering part - i had yellow...but spotlight will have all the colours of the rainbow. And she just attached it to a beanie shaped/stocking-material hat - that she probably made out of thick thick thick stockings probably.

Thanks everyone - Ragged Blossom costume solved

Thanks for your tips too... I did find Spotlight today - I went to a Dance place first and was able to get a 2nd hand tutu which is now dyed yellow and I have some other bits and pieces and putting it all together looks pretty good... I just don't see myself as the creative type who can do this sort of thing... sometimes I surprise myself!  :))

Cheerio all!

Assumption Catholic Primary

Assumption Catholic Primary School in Mandurah did this show a good ten years ago....as one of the cast members at that time, I have fond memories of it! Congrats to your daughter for scoring the role. I wonder if Assumption still has the costumes...? Probably a very long shot. Sigh. To be young again...

Assumption Catholic Primary & Ragged Blossom Costume

What a small world!  You'll love to hear this "Grommetik"... not only do those old costumes for Ragged Blossom, Snugglepot, Cuddlepie and co still exist... Mandurah Catholic college have dug them up from Assumption and they are being used for this production!!  Yes, some of them have to be replaced, many have to be repaired but guess what... the original skirt AND the original hat as worn by Assumption's "Ragged Blossom" all those years ago - is being worn by my daughter :)

I have modifed the skirt quite a bit - used it to go over something else that's bigger and fuller - and I've sewn umpteen laser sequins all over it and the orig hat is being used as the base for a much larger thing that sticks further out like the blossom looks - I had to buy a cheap straw hat and cut the middle head bit out :)

By the time all the mums have finished with all these costumes, they'll last another 10 years for the next lot of kids!

I can send you a photo if you like.

BTW - have you moved to Perth permanently - did all your family or just you?  (I'm wondering if I might know you or them... probably don't, but you never know!)

Oh, and thank you for letting me know about Assumption and the costumes because if the school hadn't already known and got them, I'd have been able to pass your info on and you'd have "saved the day" :)

Cheerio!
