This is your opportunity to learn about the Australian theatre industry, and refine your writing skills. Background: The Prompt Copy is a growing not-for-profit theatre publication. We began in 2002 and four years on have more than 300 members; from amateurs and students to long-time professionals, with both actors and techies from around Australia (and the world!) subscribed. About a month ago, we moved from an e-zine publication to a website-based community. Our site now hosts all our information, which is updated weekly with jobs, auditions, events, news and much more. Recently, our Content Writer decided to leave our organisation, and we need to fill the position. In fact, we’re looking for more than one writer! Roles Writer (Reviews/Events) X 1 • Will oversee the writing and submission of reviews and events • Will coordinate with our Marketing and Development Manager to encourage and promote our reviews and events sections Writer (News) X 1 • Will undertake the writing of news from media releases we are sent (no more than 300-500 words per item) • Will undertake ‘harvesting’ of news from other sources Writer (Features/Encyclopedia) X 2 • Will undertake the writing of feature articles and ‘encyclopedic’ entries • Will coordinate with our Marketing and Development Manager to encourage and promote submissions from our members Assistant Marketer (J&Q/Gallery) X 1 • Will oversee the submission of jokes and quotes and our image gallery sections • Will undertake any tasks required of the Marketing and Development Manager • May require some basic graphic design skills All writers have the opportunity to write in other areas, and can also collaborate with members and other writers in order to meet deadlines. We can also offer other smaller writing tasks if interested. We are extremely flexible in all tasks and demands but all writers MUST have the dedication and communication skills necessary to pursue lines of inquiry, research, and other contributors. Requirements: • An ability to write succinctly, clearly and with flair • An understanding of theatre (we will hire people based on their theatre experience over their writing or marketing skills, so please no applications from those who have no experience in theatre.) • Access to the internet and email, as there will be a heavy reliance on internet communications • The ability to be proactive in keeping to schedules, communicating with the Editor, and other necessary matters All writing will be placed on our community-based website, and a membership and access will be given. You will be able to write, format and publish your writings directly on our site. Don’t worry, you don’t need to know anything about website design or creation. We’re keen to have a writer from each capital around Australia, so that we can provide a more national viewpoint on our site. Hours of work: Will be minimal and workable around your schedule. We understand that you have a life and job, and are all working full-time jobs as well. Because everything is done online, we only ask that you put in an hour or two of writing each week. This does not mean you need to submit something every week, but that you will need to do one or two hours of work each week on an article or review. A timetable will be created with you in order to define a workable schedule and publication deadlines. We plan on having regular online chats (say, once every fortnight) to discuss problems, issues, ideas and to just touch base. Opportunities: While we can not offer payment at this time, all writers will be able to gain from working with us. • The ability and opportunity to write and hone your skills • The opportunity to learn about our industry • You will be able to network with our members, and make your name and experience known to a wide industry community • We can offer lots of support to you, your writing, your performing arts interests, and your career • You will have access to all our content, including our jobs and auditions postings and events calendar. You will also have your own profile listing on our site, which members and the wider public can view, and your own blog • A chance to be part of our other ventures in the future • A reference can be provided • Our eternal gratitude! Applications: Please send a) three examples of your best writing b) your CV c) a cover letter explaining why you would like to write for us, and what you would like to achieve in this role to editor@thepromptcopy.com. For more information about us or our service, please visit http://www.thepromptcopy.com. And if you would like to ask us something, please do not hesitate to contact us at the above email address. Applications close 19/9/06
