It is sad to say that several of the shows on in Perth at the moment, both large and small, are not listed on this web site under the 'What's On' section.

This is a free promotion facility which we are all lucky to have, and yet recently I have had to try cross-referencing, looking up production companies and venues (one main one, still not even listed) in order to find the dates or times of shows that I have heard may possibly be on now.

Your audience shouldn't have to work hard to find you.

Don't let all your crew and actors work their guts out and not even list your production. Then wonder why no one has turned up!

Kind regards

Yes indeed

I think some theatres are still unaware of this service (but that doesn't surprise me much).

I suggest members of this site and even the non-registered visitors get onto the backs of their respective theatre groups that are not posting audition and production details on this site and tell them about it.

Just my thoughts.

I hate to disagree - but I

I hate to disagree - but I see more audition and production postings on this site than any other theatre-related site for Australians. You can't find as many posts on Arts Hub, Performing Arts News, (perhaps auditions for QuietOnSet, but hardly any for theatre and hardly any production notices), or my site. True, there are many people unaware of this site. But those that spend time searching for Australian theatre info will be sent here first... Remember, the Internet isn't all that old, and many companies might not have regular access or knowledge to use it. I do agree

Na, I agree. This site gets the prime traffic load and that is a good thing. Grant has also pointed out that this site is the biggest for traffic as far as we're concerned.

There are still more out there that could make use of the site and that's who I was talking about. ;-)

What's Going On with What's On?

I do find the 'What's On' listing slightly awkward to browse through, however. For instance, if I click on "What's On this week' I get a list of 210 productions nationwide, which range from August this year (some of which I know have already ended) to September 2007! And most of them are irrelevant to me, because they are in other states. It would be far more useful for the list to be organised by state location (and then, obviously, to actually tell me what's on THIS WEEK). Clicking 'What's On Today' at least shows me today's offerings, but is still confused by mixing up every other state...can there be a filter added? Cheers, Craig ~<8>-/====\---------

If you go to whats on,

If you go to whats on, productions, WA for example, its less confusing... and more direct to see what is on categorised into months and pretty easy to read. Still has the old Australia classification, which sometimes doesnt apply to your state. but i find it an easier way than the whats on weekly... which is too cluttered for me. :)

I check out the What's On each week, and yes it can be very frustrating when you know a production is on and it isn't listed there... Theatre Australia is a fabulous tool !! And if someone is unsure how to add their listing or are unsavvy with computers, I can help you out. I make it my business to know what IS on out and about each week - so feel free to check out my website as a secondary tool. Click on the crazy faced MMOA link for a guide to what's on this week (in WA). www.tazpublicity.com Cheers Melz

Alternative explanation...?

Maybe one of the reasons companies are not listing is because they are actively avoiding this site. The forums, in which people can post willy nilly with no verified ID, no come back no way of tracing defematory or just stupid remarks, means that a lot of anonymous bull can get thrown around about productions. I've seen it happen on this site with a couple of productions that have been shot up by locally known competing companies and their members from the local area or people who have a vested interest (obvious from their words). I reckon I site that encourages support and enthusiasm for theatre, especially community theatre is absolutely tops, but if there are opportunities for nasty comments from venemous people who can't spell properly, then really the whole thing just becomes a second rate playground chat room - a vehicle for people to behave like juveniles, running around and bitching about each other which is very sad. I know of at least three companies that have taken their listings off this site (or tried to) because of this sort of problem. I know one company that wrote in to the moderator about defematory statements being made but there was no resposne and no change to the list. It's quite sad.
Walter PlingeMon, 4 Sept 2006, 11:36 am

I agree with that

I agree with Gelmetti - is that the SSO dude? amatuer theatre can be bitchy at the best of times Putting that on the internet just makes it worse Google a company or a name and you get direct unfiltered biased moaning

Valid Point

Glemetti, you raise a very valid point and one that can be a bit of thorn in the side of any individual or group trying to provide a Free-Speech Forum such as this Web Site.

The problem is, that unless you basically shut down services completely, there is very little than can be done to filter out the nonsense from the legit. I myself was recently "bagged" and found it to be questionable, but what could I do? What I did was answer without emotion and then I could have voted the postings as "Utter Rubbish" which sort of hides them, but someone got there before me on that one.

In all honestly, the Voting system provided by this site is one of the best way to monitor rubbish postings I have seen, other than ALL messages being monitored by a Site Supervisor. Considering the amount of Traffic this site gets, that would be a monumental task.

Sadly, such postings are a part of life. A bit like Spam and Junk Mail. If you can't rise above the mess, then you'll drown under it's weight.

Negative Comments

I realise we are all artists in our own way and whenever we put a show on to an extent we are laying back and offering our throat to be cut by any passing lunatic. Unfortunately it's the nature of the beast. We can often be too thin skinned, I'm guilty of it too especially if I think the criticism grows out of a failure to understand what I was trying to acheive. I try not to moderate comments on this site that relate to me. If others do it then I feel that it is not just my resentment speaking. I do moderate remarks about others that I feel are directly aimed at personality rather than justifiably at work. Look we put our work out there in the public arena. Do we really only want the nice comments. I try to learn from negatives even if I consider them unjustified. And anyway I can always say to myself "Well, what do they know anyway" particularly if they hide behind a pseudonym. Am I still on point or did I wander. Alternatives

I agree, so why don't you register and help us to build it?

:-)

You complain about people "bitching about each other" but what appears to be your very first contribution on this site deliberately and quite viciously mis-characterises the contributions of the vast majority of the participants in this community.

Maybe you were drawn or initially referred to the site because of a few barbed or immature remarks posted by a very few individuals? Have you explored much beyond this? Take your time, look around and you'll discover that these blips are completely outnumbered by the considered contributions from a very much larger group of people that share a common passion, interest and goals.

Put up or shut up time on this one.

I occasionally receive email from people claiming they've been defamed on this website. I make no representations as to my belief in the defamatory (note the spelling?) nature or otherwise but will, without question, remove any material that I'm informed is illegal, defamatory or unauthorised.

If you know someone that believes they've been defamed, they should contact me immediately using the feedback form on this site telling me specifically what they want removed and why.

> It's quite sad.

What saddens me is that you seem to expect this diverse and largely tolerant community to change to reflect the same prejudice, bigotry and lack of tolerance that your post displays.

Cheers
Grant

I will join up now

I will join up now, once I work my way through the buttons But I'm hesitant because if you express a view that criticises the way the site works you get called a bigot. Which is not really fair. I just wanted to put an alternate explanation for what i said was a good site. I'm not concerned about the site relaly I'm concerned about the some of the commentary. But like Logos says, it's kind of inevitable I guess. Yeah, good exchange, this is what should happen. I like this. I just don't like character assassination which I think is really sad. I'm sorry for my spelling. I'm very new at this and a bit new at English.
Bass GuyMon, 4 Sept 2006, 11:25 pm

Gelmetti garnerned graciously;

"I will join up now, once I work my way through the buttons" Don't panic; we all had to go through that process... "But I'm hesitant because if you express a view that criticises the way the site works you get called a bigot." Most sites of this forum-type nature have you running the same risk- one man's opinion is another man's excuse to have a go at someone. This site is particularly prone to flamboyant bouts of hyperbole, spite and bile (no, not a law firm) due to the "theatrical nature" of its participants. Nothin' we theatre-folks like better than a nice safe bitch at someone else whom we don't know and have never met- but can lacerate from the comfort of our 19" monitors. "Which is not really fair..." True, but then again life ain't fair. If it was, things like Chernobyl wouldn't happen. "I just wanted to put an alternate explanation for what i said was a good site. I'm not concerned about the site relaly I'm concerned about the some of the commentary. But like Logos says, it's kind of inevitable I guess." Well, it'll give you the indication of the level of wit amongst SOME of our number. The choice is yours; do you feel it is sporting to enter this Battle Of Wits against unarmed opponents?? He he he- I like Labrug's suggestion for an "Utter Rubbish" forum- sorry Dixi; you were nearly called "Lab Rat" there!!! I think I should have my own section on this site called "Caffeine-fuelled Gibberish"- how 'bout a forum called "Bitchfight" or a "Don't Hurt the Newbie" link? "I'm sorry for my spelling. I'm very new at this and a bit new at English." Now come on; own up- who picked on the speelung? crgwllms, I'm looking in YOUR direction :-P El "It ain't braggin' if you can back it up."- Jaco Pastorius

Who is DIXI?

You are the first person who has made comment about that little word "Dixi".

It is actually Latin for "I Have Spoken" which I have.
