SPAM ALERT - Warning for all Theatre Site Users — Theatre Australia Forums

Please be very careful when using the UserID Link to certain posts for the 25th May 2006. They have somehow linked the User ID to SPAM Web Sites. If the message does not seem to make any sense or have any relevance to the original posting, as these SPAMs are usually reply posts, then do not user the USER ID Link. I have not tried it myself but I do know they are not STANDARD USER ID links. They WILL take you to SPAM Sites and potentially Virus Sites. Exercise Caution.

Some, not all, have user ids like Cheap Order, or a spammy sounding name. Between Myself and Grant Malcolm, we have moderated the messages show they are somewhat hidden. You will just see the UserID and Message Title. Take care when accessing these messages. Preferably, don't.

Thanks for the heads up, Jeff. The spam's all gone for the moment, so there's no way for people to click on it, even if they wanted to. The spammers are really much less concerned with getting people to click on their links and are more interested in just having keywords linking to some garbage site they've created. This site is much more popular and, dare I say it, "respected" than most people realise. As a consequence, a link from this site to any other site will push that other site higher in search engine rankings. Meaning better search rankings and potentially more sales for spammers. Sadly this is what comes with being amongst the most popular sites in the world. Alexa currently ranks Theatre Australia as number 144,709 in the world in terms of traffic ranking. http://www.alexa.com/data/details/traffic_details?q=&url=www.theatre.asn.au May not sound like much, but when you consider how many sites make up the web and start looking at the rankings for other australian theatre sites, you quickly realise we have more traffic than any other australian theatre site. We're the number one link in Google for "theatre australia" and even scrape in as number 10 in a world-wide search for "theatre" on Yahoo: http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=theatre So, yes. We'll continue to attract unwanted attention from spammers. Thankfully we're much better placed to deal with these assaults with the new site. Cheers Grant
