Tony Nominations - Paul's comments

So… Firstly… the new award for Best Replacement will not be given. Apparently Harvey Fierstein in Fiddler and Jonathan Pryce in Scoundrels were the only two performers to make it past the first hurdle, but then didn’t make it over the second. Best Play Alan Bennett (The History Boys) has previously won a Special Award in 1963 for Beyond the Fringe. History Boys leads the original plays with 7 nominations. Martin McDonagh (The Lieutenant of Inishmore) has 3 previous nominations 2005 The Pillowman; 1999 The Lonesome West and 1998 The Beauty Queen of Leenane. The Lieutenant of Inishmore has ended up with 5 nominations. First time nominations for Conor McPherson (Shining City) and David Lindsay Abaire (Rabbit Hole). Shining City only has one other nomination. Rabbit Hole, the only American play in the field, has five nominations. Best Musical With Drowsy Chaperone on 13 nominations and Color Purple on 11, this looks like a 2 horse race. Jersey Boys has 8 noms and Wedding Singer 5. Best Book of a Musical The same four shows as Best Musical are nominated here. Marsha Norman (The Color Purple) has previously won this category in 1991 for the Secret Garden, as well as being nominated Best Score in 1991 for The Secret Garden and Best Play in 1983 for ‘night Mother, which also won the Pulitzer. The writers of The Drowsy Chaperone; Jersey Boys and The Wedding Singer are all first time nominees. Although Bob Martin (The Drowsy Chaperone) is also nominated in Best Actor in a Musical. Best Original Score Jersey Boys was not eligible for this award, so it looks like Woman in White has been chosen to take its place. David Zippel (lyricist for The Woman in White) won this award in 1990 for the lyrics of City of Angels. Andrew Lloyd Webber (composer for The Woman in White) has won this award three times in 1995 for Sunset Boulevard; 1983 Cats and 1980 Evita. He has also been nominated a further 6 times. The Composers of The Color Purple; The Drowsy Chaperone and the Wedding Singer are all first time nominees. Best Revival of a Play Awake and Sing! Leads the nominations with eight, more than any other play this year, original or revival. The others all have four or two nominations. Seascape is the only play two have been nominated for the Tony before, and won the Pulitzer in 1975. Best Revival of a Musical The Pajama Game (Best Musical 1955) leads the nominations with 9, ahead of Sweeney Todd (Best Musical 1979) with 6. This is definitely a two horse race. The Threepenny Opera with 2 nominations is the only other production eligible and I doubt they would have let a category go with only two nominees! I would be willing to bet that after the Tonys are announced there are only four musicals left standing: Drowsy Chaperone, Color Purple, Pajama Game and Sweeney Todd. With Chaperone having picked up the most. It seems like everyone else is in it just to make up numbers. Personally I now can’t wait for the awards to see the excerpts, especially The Drowsy Chaperone and Sweeney Todd. Although hopefully they will do Mack the Knife from Threepenny as well, that would be cool!
