And the 2006 Pulitzer Prize for Drama goes to... NOBODY! The Pulitzer Prize committee of Columbia University have decided NOT to award a Pulitzer Prize for Drama this year. The last time they made such a decision was in 1997. But... if you want to catch a Pulitzer Prize winning play try one of the following (all info pulled from this site) "Rent" by Jonathan Larson (1996 Pulitzer Prize for Drama) Schonell Theatre, University of Qld, Closes 6 May "The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds" by Paul Zindel (1971 Pulitzer Prize for Drama) Centenary Theatre Group (Qld) 8-29 July "The Teahouse of the August Moon" by John Patrick (1954 Pulitzer Prize for Drama) Roleystone Theatre (WA) 5-20 May "Harvey" by Mary Chase (1945 Pulitzer Prize for Drama) Stirling Theatre (WA) 5-20 May

Don't forget kids...

Do I think it will make a difference at the Finlay's? Yeah it'll probably mean no nominations at all... Did a quick count and I could only think of about nine Pulitzer winners that have been done in the Perth amateur scene in the last however long. Not having a list of Finlay winners to hand makes it a bit hard to crunch, but... Of those only the two musicals ("How to Screw Up a Musical Without Really Trying" and "South Pathetic") ring bells as possibly winning. The fact that the Pulitzer goes to "...a distinguished play by an American author, preferably original in its source and dealing with American life..." does cut down the number of plays even ELIGIBLE for a Pulitzer, and goes against Perth's undeniably Anglophilic repertoire. I think its more of an achievement that TWO Pulitzer winning plays are going on in the same year in Perth, let alone at the same time. Add to that Nobel Laureate Dario Fo's "Accidental Death..." and we have a surprisingly literate couple of weeks in Perth. Tell you what... If you pack your cut lunch and waterbag and come south of the river for a Wednesday Night "Teahouse", I'll get my passport ready to go north of the river for a Thursday night "Harvey". For everyone else: Come and see Two... count 'em... TWO Pulitzer Prize winning plays...
