METRO ARTS INDEPENDENTS 2009
THE PILLOWMAN – 18 March to 4 April, Sue Benner Theatre, Metro Arts
Presented by Metro Arts Independents and 23rd Productions

Metro Arts kicks off its 2009 Independents season with multi award-winning play, The Pillowman, described by the New York Times as, “Energizing…a blindingly bright black comedy,” and by the Sydney Morning Herald as “…brutal and brutally funny”.
Produced by Brisbane theatre company, 23rd Productions, and written by acclaimed English-born playwright and film director, Martin McDonagh, The Pillowman brings an eerie new tone to the words, “Once upon a time…”
As Katurian, a fiction writer, sits in an unnamed building in an unnamed city he is interrogated by two nasty cops about the gruesome content of his short stories and their disturbing similarities to a number of bizarre child murders occurring in his town.
The Pillowman is a challenging play with the most extraordinary blend of pathos and comedy. And with the recent debate over the Bill Henson case, it is also very timely in its themes, such as ‘Just what is the responsibility of the artist?’
