What's with the world of media?
Wednesday 22 March 2006
Ok, I just have to say right now - what the f is wrong with our newspapers? In Australia, our media coverage of the arts seems to be limited to what film is hot, what actor is sleeping with what other actor, and the occassional funny little story about a painting. Nothing to write home about... If it weren't for the fact that these newspapers are supposed to be reporting on the NEWS in the arts. Not the gossip. Of course, nobody buys a newspaper to read a review of a local show (unless they are in the arts), they want to read about why Angela Jolie and Brad Pitt never actually got married (actually that is an interesting story revolving an Italian town, a mayor, and a lack of tourism), and why Australian Idol might not be returning for another year.
Ok, so that's news. But what about the news that goes on that doesn't get reported? A local artist (well-known) dies and nobody even remotely reports on it. New businesses that are created for artists, that are successful, and are offering new oppportunities for artists, go unnoticed. News stories are repeated on every newspaper because they're all owned by the same companies. And anyway, news stories are all repeated because they 'harvest' headlines from one another. If one paper has an interesting story that another doesn't, then it gets 'borrowed'. I'm ok with this harvesting - what pisses me off is the constant lack of news in anything other than film, TV and gossip. Where's the theatre news? Where's the visual arts news, other than the occassional 'Who won the Archibald prize?' Where's the music news even... That seems to be relegated to what hot new Aussie band is taking America by storm, or what rapper shot who/got shot at.
I want to know - where the hell is our arts coverage? I dare you all to check out The Australian, The Age, The Mercury, The Courier Mail, The ABC Arts (one of the only decent ones out there), The Sydney Morning Herald, and The Advertiser. That's right. That's the nations major publications, right there.
Oh for some decent arts coverage...
