FRANKENSTEIN
The novel "Frankenstein" (1818) by Mary Shelley (1797-1851) has been in the public domain for a long time. Early dramatization in 1857,1910 and 1915 Did not survive. Balderston bought the rights in 1927 to a version by Peggy Webling (1871-1949). The good news - this version is preserved in the british museum. the bad news - they have the only copy. Baldserston's stage version finished with writer Garrot Fort (1900-1945) was adapted for the 1930 film. The play was not produced and Philip J. Riley (born 1948 - still alive) added his name to the work (as editor), renewing the copyright as recently as 2010. , I believe Riley's renewal claim holds no water under Australian law, but the first publication + seventy years rule applies until around 2140.
The screenplay adaptation by Faragogh (died 1966) is only public domain in the united states, but not Australia. If ever there was a popular and clearly public domain novel waiting for creative commons dramatization, this might be it.
