Political Correctness and Casting

Recently I have had a couple of points brought to my attention. First apparently neither Billy Sing the Anglo-Chinese ANZAC nor his Chinese father are to be played by Asian actors in a film or mini series or something. Second there has been mutterings in the US press over the fact that actor playing Rachel's (sp?)new love interest in Glee is gay, and an article in the US press has claimed that straight men are unable to play gay men. I as a near 60 year old man was recently offended by the performance of a young man in his 20's as a rather stereotypical elderly man in a musical. It isn't as hard as all that to find older blokes especially to play principal roles. I would now like to place on record that I am a believer in colour blind casting in most cases. I can see there are a few times that an exception is appropriate. Now in terms of Billy Sing. This role should be played by a Asian or an Australian of Asian descent. This could be considered I guess to be flying in the face of my colour blind casting views but I feel that a certain amount of consideration should be given for the difficulty that Asians in this country have establishing their careers. But where are we going? In the end too firm a requirement on absolute accuracy in casting (see the comments about gay men above) can leave us without any wriggle room whatsoever. I could be left unable to cast my Indian or Asiatic friends in any play where the role is not specifically described as being from that racial grouping. A friend of mine from Mumbai (he prefers Bombay) could be restrained from playing a Sikh or a Bengali. Are we going to insist that gay roles are only played by gay men and that gay men cannot play straight men. I saw a film called Trans America where Felicity Huffman quite brilliantly played a transexual male. That presumably will not be allowed in the future. I don't actually have an answer to this issue. This hopefully will start a debate. It's been a bit uneventful on here lately.
