Since it was written around 1600, Much Ado About Nothing has been one of ShakespeareÂ’s most popular plays. A romantic comedy with serious undertones, the play makes a wry comment on the relationship between the sexes.

NIDAÂ’s production of Much Ado About Nothing has been specifically adapted for the Centenary of Federation. It is set in the Victoria Barracks, on the eve of the 1st Anniversary of Federation. The First Australian Contingent has returned from the Boer War in South Africa, pleased with their success. Upon arriving back in Australia, they meet their match in the female counterparts, who have just been awarded the vote in a 1902 Commonwealth Franchise Act.

Much Ado About Nothing presents one of the most famous love matches in dramatic history, between Beatrice - a strong, rebellious and dominating woman, and Benedict - whose ideas about women are entirely conditioned by military service.

The production will not only celebrate an important time for our nation, but also an important turning point in the relationships between men and women.

This production is NIDAÂ’s tribute to the Centenary of Federation.
