In February 1942, the Japanese marched into Singapore and the rest, as they say, is history.
For Bridie Cartwright, an Australian Army Nurse, and Sheila Richards, a fifteen year old English schoolgirl, 13 February 1942 is the beginning of three years as prisoners of the Japanese, when the boats carrying them to safety in Australia are bombed in Banka Strait in what is now Indonesia.
Reunited in 1995 for an "Australia Remembers" documentary, Bridie and Sheila tell the story of their survival, both during the war and in the fifty years since their liberation.
Although the characters of Bridie and Sheila are fictional, every event in the play occurred between 1942 and 1945 ...... there was even a shoe-horn.
John Misto's "The Shoe-Horn Sonata" is a story of love, courage, survival and forgiveness; an uplifting, life-affirming memorial to the Army Nurses and the women and children who shared their history.
Please note that Fridays and Sundays until mid-June are sold-out, Saturday evening performances only available.
