a serious and magical comedy

THE TEMPEST is ShakespeareÂ’s final play and in it he revisits many of the themes of his greatest work. ThereÂ’s the usurped authority of MACBETH, the parental manipulation of KING LEAR, the debate about social justice and good government which lies at the heart of the sequence of plays of English history and of course thereÂ’s the theme of revenge and forbidden love most famously dramatised in ROMEO AND JULIET.

The victim of a political coup dÂ’etat by his brother, Duke Prospero retreats with his infant daughter to a remote island. There he studies and becomes a powerful magician. Many years later, chance brings his enemies within his reach; he summons a great storm, wrecks their ship and strands his brother, his brotherÂ’s son and all their entourage on the shores of the island. Now their lives are in his handsÂ…Â…Â…Â….

In many of ShakespeareÂ’s earlier plays conflicts prove insoluble and end in tragedy and death. THE TEMPEST reveals how great power may be tempered with mercy and vengeance be turned to reconciliation through the healing powers of love and forgiveness.

This lively new Hayman Theatre company production will bring to life this magical play in all its complexity, poetry, music and comedy.

'No man is an island entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent.' - JOHN DONNE (1624)
