Using the energy of a live rock show, and the sentiments of an opera, the Shining Isle is an action, adventure, and love story about the battle between the forces of creation and destruction. In this musical, the normally invisible world of the gods suddenly collides with the lives of today's Newcastle teenagers.
It's a big explosion because the gods seem powerless to protect these innocent kids from one of their own immortal kinsmen, who has broken out of an underworld prison, thirsting for revenge.
The story line: the evil Baba is chasing Adenah, a young woman he must possess to re-create his own clan of murderous half-humans.
Legendary Navajo and Hawaiian gods, and an Aboriginal ancestor (Dingo), join forces to try and stop Baba from capturing Adenah. She has just arrived in Newcastle after escaping the horrors of war back home. When Baba first pounces, a teenage boy, Evan, rescues Adenah, and then guides her on a journey through Australia to escape Baba and find the Shining Isle, their ultimate refuge. And that's only Act 1.
The story covers a huge landscape: it starts off in Navajo country of the USA, then jumps to Newcastle, moves to a dried up outback cattle station, heads up to the North End and out into a mythical Pacific island, before powering back for a big showdown in Newcastle.
