David Williamson's landmark play, The Removalists, has won a string of awards and is now regularly produced by Australian theatre companies and studied by drama, theatre arts and literature students.
2001 marks the 30th anniversary of the play's first production in 1971 at the tiny La Mama cafe theatre in Melbourne. The play's wildly funny portrayal of authoritarianism and violence produced a cold, sharp shock of recognition.
When Kate Mason asks the police to give her brother-in-law a warning about his rough behaviour towards his wife, the situation swiftly escalates out of contol. A disllusioned old-timer of a sergeant and an eager young police recruit confront Kenny, the husband whose actions today would be recognised as domestic violence, and they, and all of us by default, are responsible for the chilling conclusion.
Starring: Simon Keen, Anthony Harwood, Susan Flood, Michelle Baginski, Heath Miller and Anna Head.
The Removalists is still a confronting indictment of Australian society and a must-see for lovers of Australian drama.
