Corruption Â… Filth Â… Puppets

Shakespearience presents Alfred JarryÂ’s classic satire
‘Ubu Roi’

As the first Shakespearience production for 2002 ‘Ubu Roi’ promises to deliver more of what West Australian audiences have come to expect from this young specialty company – innovative and accessible interpretation, startling production, strong performance and, most importantly, quality entertainment.

Originally developed from farcical puppet shows devised by Jarry in his school years and later completed in Paris in the early 1890’s ‘Ubu Roi’ (the first of the Ubu trilogy of plays) is a razor-sharp socio-political satire loosely based on Shakespeare’s ‘MacBeth’. Despite having its tongue firmly planted in cheek it sparked riots amongst Parisian audiences when first performed in 1896.

Popularly considered to be the play which explosively ushered in the modern era of theatre, ‘Ubu Roi’ also laid the theatrical foundations for what would later be taken up by the Absurdists, Dadaists and Surrealists in art, literature, film and theatre.

Featuring the talents Western Australia’s top young professional actors and puppeteers this Shakespearience production of ‘Ubu Roi’ is directed by Nick Tapper, designed by international designer Bryan Woltjen (whose ambitious stage design will challenge your perceptions of the Blue Room’s spatial possibilities) and lit by Nick Higgins.
