In the early days of WW II, author Dymphna Cusack (Come in Spinner) was banished from Sydney by the NSW Education Department for her rebelliousness. Fortunately for audiences today, Cusack poured her passion and story-telling skills into her Australian classic, Morning Sacrifice.

Set over three days in the hotbed staffroom of a girls high school, this is a time when dedicated women are booted out of teaching when they marry, when the slightest moral indiscretion can set off a landslide of innuendo and intrigue. Nine intricately drawn teachers struggle with the system and each other. The chillingly charming Deputy Head Portia Kingsbury (Sandy Gore) wants them all in the palm of her hand. Crushed if necessary, but under her control.

In this marvellous ensemble piece, as the progressives struggle to maintain their humour and idealism, and the sycophants shore up their status with their adored Headmistress (Dinah Shearing) no-one notices the tragedy that is quietly and lethally unfolding around them.

Will the velvet-tongued Portia succeed in destroying the newest and most fragile member of her staff room?

A brilliantly tense and ironic drama, flooded with wit and love, Morning Sacrifice is one of Dymphna Cusack's finest achievements.

"The script suggests an emotional pitch which is gripping for me, yet it is a piece of restraint. Like a Merchant Ivory film, Morning Sacrifice captures a moment in time for an audience, a snapshot, an insight." Wesley Enoch, director
