A NEW ANNUAL TRADITION FOR AN AWARD WINNING COMPANY

As local theatre company, Shoestring enters its third year; directors John Jenkins and Emma Sproule are presenting another new initiative set to be another permanent fixture on each yearÂ’s theatrical calendar.

The concept of the production stems from the days of ancient Greece, the birth place of theatre, where all plays were either comedy or tragedy, with little blurring of the dividing lines, and where actors could be expected to perform more than one role in one production in any given season. Once again making full use of the companyÂ’s home at The Briars, The Two Faces of Theatre 2006 will be performed in the intimate and atmospheric setting of the barn (clearly the peninsulaÂ’s answer to the colosseum,) and the evening will consist of two one-act plays, one tragic and the other comic in nature, both to be performed by the same core cast.

The first piece to be performed will be the tragedy entitled The Beach Club written by American playwright Ludmilla Bollow and directed by Theresa Holt. This piece is set on a small section of beach where the same small group of people come, often day after day. Their reasons range from ritual, solace, escape and notoriety. They each have little in common and were it not for their independent need for the beach, would never cross paths. Each has their own story, some more tragic than others and in most cases so self-absorbing that they miss the pain of those around them.

The Comedy is Alan AyckbournÂ’s classic, Between Mouthfuls, a play that has already been performed by the company, albeit with a slightly different cast. It was an entry in 2003Â’s Mornington One-Act Play Eisteddfod, where it won awards, including Best Actor by John Jenkins for the role he will be reprising. It will, once more be directed by Emma Sproule. Set in a high class restaurant, it follows the entertaining discussions of two separate couples come to dine, but only in the small portions as heard by the increasingly frustrated yet curious waiter who is doomed to serve them.

The production has a varied yet gifted cast, many of whom are no strangers to the Shoestring stage. Theresa Holt, John Jenkins, Lauren MacTaggart, and Tom Rees have all performed with the company before however, Kerrie Moss is a newcomer to the family. The production also stars Alan Tonkin who recently won a Victorian Drama League award in the category of Best Actor in a Leading Role for his role in ShoestringÂ’s The Crucible early 2005. The company received seven nominations in total (including best production and best director, Emma Sproule) as well as winning the award for Best Actress in a Minor Role (Joan Crossland).

The Two Faces of Theatre will be an annual event held in the barn early each year. The company’s other annual events include the Halloween show, performed in the last weekend of October, also in the barn. This piece consists of two separate one-act plays, designed to send tingles up the audience’s spines and written by local playwrights. The third permanent fixture on the Shoestring calendar is the Shoestring Showcase, performed cabaret style in St. Peter’s Hall, Mornington in the first two weekends in December. This is a revue of sorts. It’s an evening of formal attire yet irreverent hilarity consisting of one-act plays, sketches, monologues and routines – all comic. Both Halloween and Showcase productions saw their debut in 2005 and were equally successful and well received.
