THE MERCHANT OF VENICE
By William Shakespeare
Bassanio is set on a quest to travel to faraway Belmont to win a fair maiden named Portia. But in order to do so, he must first borrow money from his companion, the merchant Antonio. But Antonio’s money is tied up in business and he must in turn borrow from Shylock, the Jewish moneylender, who offers to drop all interest in favour of an unusual bond: if Antonio defaults, Shylock may take a pound of his flesh. What could possibly go wrong?
One of Shakespeare’s most controversial plays, this rich and complex comedy explores intolerance, vengeance, love and money – how they intersect, and the ways in which they bind us.
