THE TEMPEST at Curtin

“Now would I give a thousand furlongs of sea for an acre of barren ground…” It was eight years ago that the weather changed. The seas rose and inundated the land. Only pockets of climate refugees remain, moving from port to port. Prospera, the usurped Commander of Milan, cast off in a raft to die with her daughter Miranda, survives in a lighthouse on a small island where a malformed creature, Caliban, dwells. Desiring revenge, Prospera magically causes a tempest. It wrecks the ship carrying her villainous sister, Antonia, and strands its company on the island. Can these strange bedfellows reconcile in these strange lands or has the moment been lost? In the intimate Upstairs Theatre, the cast will explore a tale renowned for its dark magic and romance, as well as its stark commentary on the motives and manipulations of those who we empower to lead our society – in the future, nothing is certain. Audiences can expect a quick witted, high energy approach that captures the imagination and enlightens the verse. The design will combine an apocalyptic potential future altered by climate change and a dexterous study of the world and the characters that exist in the play. This contemporary adaptation of Shakespeare’s last play is instantly recognizable in this new Hayman Theatre Company production of THE TEMPEST.
