Harbour Theatre, Fremantle's only and original community theatre for 50 years, is proud to present for our second production for our Golden Jubilee Year, “ON GOLDEN POND” By Ernest Thompson Directed by Trevor Dhu (A Community Theatre Production By Arrangement with Hal Leonard Australia Pty Ltd on behalf of Dramatists Service Inc, NY) Another summer on Golden Pond awaits...... Many people would be familiar with the Academy Award winning 1981 film adaptation of On Golden Pond, starring Henry Fonda (in his last film role), Katherine Hepburn and Jane Fonda. Harbour Theatre is now delighted to present you with a unique opportunity to see this moving family drama in an intimate theatre setting. This anticipated production marks Harbour Theatre's second season for 2013 - our Golden Jubilee Year. This particular production will be brought to the Harbour Theatre stage by the highly regarded director Trevor Dhu who previous directing credits include the hugely successful "The 39 Steps" for Harbour Theatre early in 2012. “I am delighted to be back at Harbour directing On Golden Pond which was met with such great critical and popular acclaim when it was first produced both off and on Broadway and was the basis for the famous film adaptation.” Dhu says. “Finding strong actors who can portray the central characters with the necessary depth of feeling and believability was an absolute necessity. I can say I am thrilled to be working with a team of the highest acting calibre” Mandurah local and award-winning actor Tom Rees has been cast as Norman Thayer who, with his wife Ethel (played by Applecross resident and award-winning actress Joan Scafe, are returning to their summer home on Golden Pond for the forty-eighth year. He is a retired professor, nearing eighty, with heart palpitations and a failing memory. Despite these afflictions he is still as tart-tongued, observant and eager for life as ever. Ethel, ten years younger and the perfect foil for Norman, delights in all the small things that have enriched their long lives together. They are visited by their divorced, middle-aged daughter Chelsea (played by Melissa McBride of South Perth) and her dentist fiancé Bill Ray (Alex Hickman of Cottesloe) who then go off to Europe leaving behind his teenage son Billy Ray (Caleb Houseman of Bicton). The boy quickly becomes the grandchild the elderly couple have longed for and Norman revels in taking his ward fishing and introducing him to good books however, learns some lessons about modern teenagers in return. Andy Markland of East Fremantle also makes a welcome return to Harbour’s stage playing the part of Charlie who has been of friend of Chelsea since their childhood. Director Dhu adds: “Directing such a talented team of actors is a sheer pleasure. The deeply complex central characters are a challenge and one that the actors meet head-on with extraordinarily fine results.” SEASON DATES: May 10, 11, 15, 17, 18, 22, 24 & 25 2013, commencing at 8:00pm MATINEE: Sunday May 12 & 19 commencing at 2:00pm May 12 is a special Mother’s Day performance – tickets include a glass of champagne or scone, jam and cream.
