Playwright
Patrick White
Director
Peter Kirkwood
Harbour Theatre, Fremantle's only and original community theatre for 50 years, is proud to present for our third production for our Golden Jubilee Year, "The Season At Sarsaparilla" By Patrick White Directed by Peter Kirkwood 1961 –oral contraceptives are first sold in Australia, “I’m Gonna Knock On Your Door” is the No 1 hit, Robert Menzies is Prime Minister, the ABC’s long running “Four Corners” programme is broadcast for the first time..........ahh the memories! Described as a “charade of suburbia” “The Season at Sarsaparilla” by our pre-eminent story-teller Patrick White, provides a humourous and insightful look at Australian suburban life in 1961. This highly anticipated production will be Harbour Theatre’s 3rd production for their 50th anniversary year. Patrick White was an Australian writer who is regarded as one of the most important English- language novelists of the 20th century. In 1973, White became the only Australian awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. He often turned his keen eye on ordinary everyday Australia. “The Season At Sarsaparilla” depicts its astounding depth. "The Season at Sarsaparilla", at its simplest, is a portrait of overlapping lives. The action follows the workaday lives of three families in the fictional Australian suburb of Sarsaparilla where the cycle of life is played out repeatedly. Birth, death, love, mateship, betrayal, loss, infidelity, desire and abuse shape the entire action of the play. Asked why he chose this play best director award winner Kirkwood states “I have directed a number of great Australian classics such as “Summer of the Seventeenth Doll”, “The One Day of the Year” and “No Names No Packdrill” over the many years I have been involved in community theatre and feel that “The Season at Sarsaparilla” is another one of these great classics. The stories all have one thing in common – they resonate with audiences who recognise parts of themselves and the people they may know in the characters. “The Season at Sarsaparilla” is no different – it is a powerful and funny play with strong and challenging characters played by a large cast of only the highest calibre.” Featuring Fremantle local Michael Dornan as Clive Pogson and best actress award winner Nicola Bond of Applecross as his wife Girlie, the play examines the lives of three families within a small suburban setting during the height of summer with a bitch on heat somewhere out on the streets creating havoc among the local dogs. The Pogson’s neighbours are played by a host of actors familiar to Harbour Theatre audiences including Ann Speicher of Mosman Park as the sensual Nola Boyle and Trevor Dhu of Atwell as Rowley Masson, Teigan Isobel as Mavis Knott and Harry Knott played by Sam Christiner. The play also introduces some extremely talented new-comers to this long-running Fremantle theatre including Darcie Azzam as the Pogson’s daughter Pippy and Paris Doick as her friend Deedree Inkpen. Kirkwood continues “Audiences will find "The Season at Sarsaparilla" funny, heart-breaking and intelligent. This is a classic piece of great Australian theatre that tells a story that everyone can identify with.” CAST : Mavis Knott : Tiegan Isobel Harry Knott : Sam Christiner Roy Child : Mark Tilley Girlie Pogson : Nicola Bond Clive Pogson : Michael Dornan Judy Pogson : Chelsea Hankin Pippy Pogson : Darcie Azzam Deedree Inkpen : Paris Doick Nola Boyle : Ann Speicher Ernie Boyle : Kenneth Gasmier Rowley Masson : Trevor Dhu Ron Suddards : Scott Wilson Julia Sheen : Olivia Clark Mr Erbage : Mark Edwards Ambulance Man : Phil Redding, Brian Mahoney SEASON DATES: July 19, 20, 24, 26, 27, 31, August 2 & 3 2013, commencing at 8:00pm MATINEE: Sunday July 28 & 28 commencing at 2:00pm VENUE: Port Cineaste Building 70 Adelaide Street, Fremantle (next to Princess May Park, opposite Woolworths) For membership enquiries please contact 9433 6260.
