Truth, justice, life and liberty! John Solicitt and Roger Steele are two “everyday heroes” who are the best young lawyers in town. When disaster strikes and Solicitt and Steele lose their practising certificates in the face of professional misconduct charges, they are given just one shot at redemption – a totally unwinnable case. A beautiful young socialite is accused of murder, and nobody believes her innocence – not even her. To make matters worse, the government has hired the internationally feared Austrian barrister Wolfgang von Lionheart to ensure she rots in prison. As Solicitt and Steele submit to romantic temptation and endanger their careers all over again, the courtroom is set for adventure, hilarity, and intrigue.
The musical is the flagship production of Showroom Theatre Inc., a new theatre company formed by actual lawyer-in-training and playwright James Marzec, and music teacher John McPherson. The duo, who have won numerous Robert Finley Awards for independent WA theatre as musical team M & M Productions, have created an original musical comedy about celebrating lawyers as much as we occasionally despise them. "Lawyers and OCD" is an exaggerated satire of what lawyers as a profession have done to deserve our mixed reputation in the community – how some solicitors and barristers naturally choose the noble path, and some lust after power and prestige.
The show stars the leading lights of the Perth drama community, and features a live jazz band performing an original score by musical director Mr McPherson. The musical score, which borrows influences from big band, swing and classic musical theatre, features such songs as “Court!” - a triumphant celebration of self-importance in the judiciary, “(Don’t) Take it from Me” - a villainous ode to the power of civil lawsuits, and the signature musical theme, “Everyday Heroes”.
‘Lawyers and Other Communicable Diseases’ debuts for a strictly limited season at the Subiaco Arts Centre from the 25th to the 29th of September. Tickets are available now from Ticketek – with tickets on-sale for $24.50 (special rates available for concessions and group bookings).
