Sex, Lies and Death compete at this family Birthday party...
Tennessee Williams' Pulitzer Prize-winning jewel Cat On A Hot Tin Roof
is an emotionally intense family drama that sizzles with passion and greed.
"It is great fun working on this play," says Director Roz
Riley. "There are no small characters or small emotions - they are all
monsters or heroes - and often both. All their interactions are charged with
love, hate or overwhelming need."
One sweltering evening, a prominent and powerful family gathers at the 65th
birthday celebration for patriarch Big Daddy Pollitt, a wealthy Southern
plantation owner, the 'Delta's biggest cotton-planter'. However, during the
course of the evening this Southern dynasty is pushed to the brink when
life-altering secrets are revealed. Big Daddy is dying of cancer and the family
members endeavour to hide the truth of his diagnosis from him and Big Mama. But
it becomes clear that all the family has for a long time constructed a web of
deceitfulness around their loves and hatreds.
Tensions in the house mount between Brick, a former football hero turned
alcoholic, and his beautiful but sexually starved wife Maggie. The elder son
Gooper is a respected family man and should be expected to inherit the vast
estate. But the two wives are prepared to fight like cats to see that their
side of the family gets all the money.
Amid a place of stone, be secret and exult; Because of all things known,
that is most difficult - Tennessee Williams
