“Open Sesame!” Aladdin flies into the Metcalfe Playhouse for the Christmas season.
In 2010, John Senczuk reintroduced professional pantomime back into the Perth festive season; his production of Puss In Boots, at the now defunct Perth Playhouse, played to a sold out season of over 5000 patrons! The Playhouse panto tradition was driven by Perth theatre legend Edgar Metcalfe (in whose honour the current Playhouse is named) during his helm of the long-gone National Theatre Company. “Family is what Senczuk’s adaptation is all about” David Zampatti commented in his review of Puss in Boots, “there’s the usual smattering of double-entredres and merry making ... but this is squarely a show for kids, with a bit of over-their-heads smuttery thrown in for their mums and dads.” For the
Metcalfe Playhouse Christmas panto this year, Senczuk’s associate director, Mark Barford – who scored a huge success with the recent premiere of The Magic Pudding – has written a new localised version of one of the most popular tales of all time: Aladdin. A Middle Eastern folk tale, Aladdin is one of the stories in The Book of One Thousand and One Nights (Arabian Nights) and is one of the most famous.
The wicked sorcerer Abanazar is seeking the magic lamp that contains the all-powerful Genie, so that he can rule the world, and is just steps away from succeeding!
Is all hope lost? No! Help is at hand! A family posse of wannabe heroes are here to foil Abanazar’s evil scheme! The cheeky local lad, Aladdin, his brother, the overworked Wishee Washee and their fearsome mother, washerwoman Widow Twankey are ready to intervene and save the day!
Throw in a magic carpet, the Empress, her beautiful Princess and an inept Police Commissioner and you have all the ingredients for a fantastic tale and great entertainment.
Packed with songs, slapstick, silliness, audience participation for the whole family and all the fairytale magic of traditional pantomime! Written and directed by Mark Barford, the cast includes Sam Tye, Michael Bingaman, Atara Lebransky, Angelique Malcolm, Iskandar Sharazuddin and James Hagan as the Widow Twankey. Musical director is Tim How, designs by Penny Mazzucchelli and lighting by Aaron Stirk.
Complete with a genie, a villain, a magic lamp and plenty of music, comedy and romance, this is sure to be the high-flying highlight of the festive season!
